Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. [edit] Stereotypes in the American media

Hi,

I have commented on the AfD for Stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims that the title of the article (and its sister "Stereotypes of ..." articles) should have "in the American media", "in Western popular culture", or something similar added to the title as this is the actual focus of the articles. For instance, the Arabs and Muslims article does not, for instance, include stereotypes of Arabs among Israelis, among Africans, and so on. As you are the creator of all of the articles, I wanted to get your thoughts on the idea.

Hey, you definitely have a good point. This issue was brought up here when I originally suggested the split, but there wasn't much feedback. Since the parent article was from an American perspective, the split articles definitely have an American bias, which is problematic (e.g. Stereotypes of Asians has been tagged with the "globalize" tag, and there is also a discussion about worldwide POV on its discussion page as well). I think the scope Western for the pages is better than just American, because I feel that many of the stereotypes of non-Western ethnicities are the same or similar across Europe, America, Canada & the Western world in general & it'd be silly to have separate pages for each Western nation doing the stereotyping. I agree it would be more descriptive & accurate if we included "in the Western world" or something like that to each of the titles, but it would be cumbersome as well so I'm not sure how that ought to be rectified. Non-Western stereotyping of various groups really hasn't been addressed much on Wikipedia in its own right. Non-Western POVs currently don't have a home & their categorization would be tricky, but the content also doesn't currently exist yet (except maybe in other contexts). So while it is a valid concern, I'd personally worry about it when the issue arises. What would you suggest? --Drenched 04:30, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

I think you make a good point about "Western" being more appropriate than "American". However, there are articles that deal with individual countries (e.g., Irish settlement in Argentina). That said, such articles may well come under criticism for being too specific. The shortest title I can think of is [[Stereotypes of [Group] in Western media]] (without the "the" that would be necessary for "Western world"). It is long, but it is also informative (although then the article should include references to non-American media as well). I do agree that splitting the main Ethnic stereotypes in American media was a correct decision as the article is quite long. I will take a closer look at the other articles and will comment here if I think of something else. I suppose waiting until someone raises the issue (hopefully with suggestions) is sufficient for now--maybe some ideas will come up in the AfD. Cheers, Black Falcon 04:57, 6 February 2007 (UTC)

Well maybe the person above rings a bell. He vandalised the human height page for a while with endless OR, blaming skin whiteners, soy products, rice, low testosterone diets etc for chinese shorter stature and if left this article becomes almost entirely about northern chinese nutrition labeling anyone removing his stuff as white supremacists. He uses similar ideas for explaining lower verbal intelligence then leaves the conclusion, "yes, northern chinese are the superior race since they have the highest intelligence and greatest potential for height" and attacks every other asian country including south east asians. I came across his other visitations especially the stereotypes of south asians while trying to ban him and successfully did but now he uses other IP's and adds his same OR. From how you responded to him and this message he left you in that discussion I guessed perhaps you were aware of his vandalism. 71.185.237.63 is one of 3 of his new addresses since July 13. If you still contribute to that page be sure to watch for him. His material is te same on the asian fetish article and skin whiteners for reference. Oh, okay I understand now. Thanks for the heads up, this absolutely does concern me. The article that I was editing was primarily Stereotypes of East and Southeast Asians, but a while after he started making 20+ edits a day of OR in abysmal English and undoing my edits and ballooning the article to an unnecessarily epically long mess, I got worn out trying to salvage the page and stopped editing. I just visited the article again recently and it makes me sad. Is it really necessary for the topic of East/Southeast Asian stereotyping to have 4 branch-off articles?? Anyway, I'm not surprised to hear your story about the Human height page...I've had a similar experience with him on the stereotypes page. He tried to assert that Asians had higher IQs than everyone else, tried to devote an entire section to why soybeans make people shorter and more effeminate, and called me a white supremacist when I removed his very off topic contributions. I was unaware that he had gotten banned. How did you go about getting him banned (is there a discussion or history page somewhere about this banning)? The best thing to do is look at his talk page unfreeride. The story is self explanatory. I'm mentioned there with a few other people who tried to stop him as accused sockpuppets. This page finished in mid July after his second block. A few days later new IP's emerged readding same content some of them have been blocked already for similar reasons. Someone has recently put in a "suspected sockpuppet" enquiry with a few adresses so far. His content in the stereotype section isn't as crazy as "skin whiteners affect verbal IQ but not spatial"(skin whitener article), some of his junk is quite entertaining but nevertheless destructive as the human height page can double in size when chinese nutritrion is added to justify in his words(i cut and pasted you can delete though) NORTHERN CHINESE DO NOT GET ENOUGH CALORIES.

YES, ASIANS ARE SHORTER, IF YOU MEANT SOUTHERN CHINESE. SOUTHER CHINESE ARE ALSO NOT AS INTELLIGENT. HOWEVER, THE GENETICALLY TALLER AND HIGHLY INTELLIGENT NORTHERN CHINESE ARE TALLER THAN WHITES.

NORTHERN CHINESE ARE GENETICALLY TALLER THAN SOUTH KOREANS, WHICH ARE TALLER THAN JAPANESE. NORTHERN CHINESE ARE THE SUPERIOR RACE SINCE THEY ARE THE SMARTEST AND THE TALLEST POTENTIAL.

WHY DO YOU CLAIM THAT ASIANS ARE *GENETICALLY* SHORTER WHEN THERE ARE NO SOURCES???????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? (by the way we never did, we just enquired to why he said they were taller). This ranting goes on for weeks. Hello :-) You were involved in writing the article Stereotypes of white race ethnic groups and right now it's nominated for deletion. I really hope you could oppose it being deleted and ask to keep it. It's a nice interesting article, and only the polit-correction fanatics oppose to it (but those oppose to everything. I myself am white, Russian by the father and Jewish by the mother, and i really enjoyed the article and even created the Jews section and added information to the Russians section). Really nice article it's sad they couldn't undertand it. One of the most interesting and usefull articles i have ever seen. You did a nice work on it! Thanks for your kind words, but I really can't take credit for the content of stereotypes of whites. All I did was split the article off from the parent article and copy/paste the contents. I agree that it is a pity that a lot of people didn't really understand what the article was about, which in itself exposes a major flaw of the article. Next time around, perhaps more emphasis can be placed in the intro on what the article is NOT about =P Even if you don't feel that you can improve the article, if you're interested in resurrecting it later on, you might want to keep the contents in your sandbox for future reference. When previously i tryed to bring people to support the article, i was canvassing without knowing such laws exist, and thats why all those invatation to the voet, almost, got deleted. Now i called many people in a nutral way (notifying about the vote without trying to tell a person how to vote according to the laws is allowed). If you would check the nomination for deletion page, from 11-2 against us it chenged to 12-6 against us. Maybe the chances we have to save it are small, but at least we will know we tryed to save it till the end. An example to how i invite people to vote can be found here. As you can see, a nutral invatation without any convassing. You can do the same, but make shure it's done in a nutral way and not canvassing. M.V.E.i. 21:32, 3 September 2007 (UTC)
