[edit] Image copyright problem with Image:180px-Karakuwa-Miyagi.png
Thanks for uploading Image:180px-Karakuwa-Miyagi.png. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Orphaned fair use image (Image:YorkLogo50px.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:YorkLogo50px.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently specifies that the image is unlicensed for use on Wikipedia and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Durin 22:53, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Sizing of images
Dcwright; you do not need to upload various versions of an image to get different sizes. The Wikimedia software has support for resizing an image. Look at the code that I am typing here to see examples. Visually, you'll see the difference in size between these two images, but they are the same image...I'm just asking the Wikimedia software to resize. Observe:
Hope this helps, --Durin 22:59, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Orphaned images
Drcwright; fair use images must be used in the main article namespace or they are considered orphaned. The main article namespace is comprised of actual encyclopedia articles. Userboxes, userpages, templates, categories, and etc. do not count towards this requirement. Further, fair use images may not be used on userboxes, userpages, templates, etc. Please do not remove the orphaned fair use tags from images until you have verified they are used in actual articles. If you have any questions about this, I'd be happy to answer. Thank you, --Durin 23:03, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Re: Image:YorkLogo50px.gif
- The page I see states that it is fair use of a logo "to illustrate the organization, item, or event in question". Does it need to be in an article? It currently being used in the YorkU userbox for student and alumni of York University, and I think that should be sufficient.
- Regarding Image:YorkLogo48px.gif -- I didn't like the quality so I redid it (Image:YorkLogo50px.jpg) with plans to delete it (~48px.gif).
-
- Oh. I don't see how all the images in those userboxes are in a main article. I'll look into it though. Thanks. Drcwright 23:09, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
- Fair use images are not permitted on userboxes, period. At any given moment, there are userboxes that have fair use images on them in violation of policy. Myself and a number of other editors attempt to police this. --Durin 23:13, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

I am curious as to why this Queen's logo is not considered orphaned. It is only on user and template pages.

- Because it's not tagged with a fair use license, but a free license. In this case, {{PD-self}} --Durin 23:19, 14 December 2006 (UTC)

- Ohhh. I thought that because this represented York's logo, I had to tag it as a logo. I added the text and used 2 different images in Photoshop to make the logo. Do I thus change the license to "free"? Drcwright 23:26, 14 December 2006 (UTC)
-
- Okay... no matter. That was the wrong one too. I've added a new one Image:YorkLogoMotto.png under a free license.
- Forgive me but I think I may not have conveyed the point. The logos must be tagged as logos because they are copyrighted works. We can not free them of copyrights just by tagging them under a free license. We have to gain specific release of rights from the copyright holder for that.
- With regards to Image:YorkLogoMotto.png, that is a derivative work, combining the copyrighted images Image:Yorkucrest.gif and http://www.yorku.ca/alumni/images/yorkheader.gif. Yes, some of your creativity went into making it. York University however retains rights to the graphic. I'm sorry. I've retagged the image as {{logo}}, removed it from the userbox, and labeled it as orphaned. --Durin 03:07, 15 December 2006 (UTC)
- Shit. Thanks. I've got it now. Although, I think it's silly that a logo can't be used for a userbox when that logo clearly defines the membership of the userbox.
- Okay... no matter. That was the wrong one too. I've added a new one Image:YorkLogoMotto.png under a free license.
- Drcwright, you've once again added a fair use image to the York U userbox. This time, it was Image:Yorkucrest.gif. Could I ask you to please query me on my talk page before adding another image to that userbox? I've tried to communicate to you the nature of these images and how to avoid using them but apparently I'm not getting the message across. Perhaps if you just asked me directly I could tell you, before you put another fair use image on the userbox in violation of our policy. Ok? --Durin 18:14, 15 December 2006 (UTC)

It's a romanization issue. We haven't really decided on whether to use WG or Pinyin for these types of articles. -- 我♥中國 03:53, 21 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:LucieBlackman.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:LucieBlackman.jpg. The image description page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

[edit] Mama-san
Hi. I browsed through the history of hostess bar, and your name comes up fairly often, so I figured it's safe to assume you have some knowledge/interest in the more Japanese side of nightlife in Japan. The reason I decided to contact you is this: if you should have some knowledge of the whole mama-san thing, could you look into the article? It's in a terrible state as it is - it's been started out with the assumption that mama-san implies to female pimps in Thailand, and while this may be true it's blown out of proportions in the article. For comparison, the German article is way more apropriate - it describes your typical motherly snack bar mastress who pours drinks for sarariman, listens to their complaints and pats them on the shoulders because their bosses don't. Sarariman aren't even mentioned in the English article. If you have no time for or interest in this article, I'll probably eventually just translate the German article. TomorrowTime 02:05, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Got your reply. Same here about the job - just got a new one. Funny thing, jobs. You have so much less time on your hands...
- Anyway, how about we do a collaboration? I translate the German article into a sandbox somewhere and then you can go through it and add whatever info you've got? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by TomorrowTime (talk • contribs) 08:00, 16 January 2007 (UTC).
- sounds good. now i gotta get back to work! lol. Drcwright 05:47, 18 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:AlmostTransparentBlue1stEngTradePaperback.jpg
