Talk:Dragging death

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The NPOV is not because of the text itself. The text itself is fine... the problem is that the user who created this page and provided the list of victims has provided only 1 victim which is non-white, while the others involve whites being the victims, with a black(s) being the criminal(s) responsible for the death of the victims. This has "bad faith" written all over it. All the articles except for the article about the non-white victim were created by the same user that created this page... further calling into question the integrity of this article. --Chanting Fox 20:26, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

  • I noticed the same thing, but Chanting Fox beat me to putting up the notice. I've added a NPOV notice to the other articles, and directed them to the discussion here. Xcali 20:33, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

I disagree with Chanting Fox's statement "The text itself is fine." I think the last sentence of the article clearly shows the author has an axe to grind. Xcali 20:40, 28 May 2005 (UTC)

When you consider how long the James Byrd article has been on Wikipedia, how much attention his murder received and how little attention the white victims of similar crimes received, I don't think I'm doing anything but trying to correct a blatant imbalance. But feel free to add non-white victims to even the score. (And I'm sure I won't need to tell a good thoughtpolicepersons to check all my edits to make sure my "bad faith" hasn't infected Wikipedia elsewhere.) (Unsigned entry made by 213.78.110.147)
  • James Byrd's death was widely considered a hate crime--killed only because of his race. Out of the 5 entries you posted, 3 were incidental in the commission of other crimes such as auto theft, 1 is questionable (killed after argument with an argument with people known to him who happened to be a minority race), and 1 may very well be a hate crime. I stand by my original statement. --Xcali 21:02, 28 May 2005 (UTC)
All the deaths, "incidental" and otherwise, were murders of a particularly brutal and callous kind. All but James Byrd's received far less attention than they deserved, for the obvious reason that they were non-white-on-white, and James Byrd's would not have received so much attention if it had been a shooting or stabbing. I also wonder if you would have objected at all if my additions had been of non-white victims. (Unsigned entry made by 213.78.162.63)
  • You've talked to every reporter who had a chance to report on this, and they've all told you that they didn't write the story because it was minority on majority crime? You've offered no proof of your claims. I've stated my beliefs on the topic above. These were crimes, yes, but not hate crimes. Honesty, I'm about ready to take this article to VfD. --Xcali 15:58, 29 May 2005 (UTC)

Is this article, as a whole, necessary? Wikipedia doesn't have Shooting death or Stabbing death (though it does have Stabbing). While this does occur, the case of James Byrd seems to be the only one commonly associated with this term - maybe the page should redirect to James Byrd. --Dcfleck 02:47, 2005 May 29 (UTC)

Wikipedia has articles for forms of death or murder of particular interest: decapitation, for example. That James Byrd is the only one commonly associated with dragging death is a reflection of media bias, not of the inherent interest or importance of other cases. If media bias determines what goes in Wikipedia, you'll have to start cutting a huge number of articles.

[edit] NPOV template removed

I've removed the template (and added a pov template to Ken Tillery) as the content here is NPOV in the current version. This discussion is nearly a year old and no-one has added other names to the list. If the list overrepresents one race, add other names to it. Make the list exhaustive. Overrepresentation on a list is not bias per se, although it may indicate that further research is required. Colonel Tom 04:49, 12 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Dragging Deaths & FBI

Well, I'd say that this article is redundant if the FBI 'Uniform Crime Report' doesn't give the numbers of this type of murder. Also, 'dragging death' - does this include accidents? I say DELETE! 08/11/05 Eddie.willers

This is mainly to the unsigned poster who thinks that the Ken Tillery was racially motivated and should be listed as a hate crime, the following link is to KTFE channel 9 in Lufkin TX http://www.ktre.com/Global/story.asp?S=630832

The Ken Tillery murder was not racially motivated.
