Drawer dishwasher
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Drawer dishwasher is a type of dishwashing machine designed and manufactured by Fisher & Paykel. They are available under several brands depending on geographic location Fisher & Paykel, Kenmore Appliances, KitchenAid, and Bauknecht following a distribution agreement with Whirlpool[1].
In 1987 Fisher & Paykel staff engineer Adrian Sargeant and designer Phil Brace developed the DishDrawer concept. A DishDrawer is based on a design similar to filing cabinet with each dishwasher having two fully independent cabinets (or drawers). The DishDrawer was exhibited in 1996 at Domotechnica and was launched in 1997. By this time Fisher & Paykel had spent $10 million to develop the machine[2].
They are marketed as either an individual drawer, for small apartments or homes or double units which have two separate drawers stacked together. Each drawer is independent this allows different wash settings to be used on different loads. It also allows dishes to be washed as a drawer is filled.
DishDrawer washers have capacity limitations due to their lower height, which limits the size of dishes that can be placed inside. Early models had complaints about the noise that they made when washing. This has been improved on with later models.[citation needed]
[edit] Kosher usage
One popular use of drawer dishwashers is by Jewish people who keep kosher. Orthodox Jewish law requires utensils for meat and dairy to be washed separately. The drawer dishwashers allow separate meat and dairy dishwashers in a small kitchen that might otherwise only have room for only one full-size dishwasher. The Kenmore Elite has, within its programming, a way to set a kosher setting.
