Drake Landing Solar Community

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Drake Landing Solar Community (DLSC) is a planned community area powered solely by using the light of the sun (solar power), and energy efficient technology. The community itself is located in the town of Okotoks, Alberta, Canada. The facilities are designed so that throughout the summer months, heat energy will be stored underground and during the winter season the energy will be evenly distributed to each of the homes throughout the district.[1] It is billed as the first solar powered subdivision in North America.[2]

The system has been designed to help with the rising issues of global warming and burning fossil fuels; the area was built in an attempt to dramatically decrease the climate pollution from the area. It has been reported that over five tonnes of greenhouse gases will be saved per home per year.[3]

The heat and energy produced by the sunlight are stored throughout pipes and the light is captured by 800 solar panels[4] located on the roofs of the houses across all fifty-two houses.[5]
