[edit] Plot summary

A man named Gareth-a courtier in his king's court in the Deep of Ylferdun-goes on a journey to the far reaches of the Winterlands to enlist the help last remaining dragonsbane (someone who slays dragons) John Aversin in an attempt to slay the black dragon Morkleb that has been terrorizing the city. While searching for John, Gareth is saved by an attack from a group of bandits by a witch named Jenny Waynest who is the mother of John Aversin's sons. After finding John, Gareth's request is met with the utmost reluctance as he just barely survived his last encounter with a dragon. Gareth manages to convince John by agreeing to have the King aid the entire Winterlands region should John decide to come. When the company reaches the city to slay Morkleb, Jenny realizes the full danger that John could be killed. Nevertheless Jenny makes a deal with the dragon Morkleb which gives her a dragon body, magic and immortality. She eventually has Morkleb reverse the spell in order to be with John again.
