About Dr. Sheskin's Family
His father Josef was a Dental Surgeon, D.M.D. Graduated School of Dentistry at the Leningrad University, but in fact he was a reach banker. He was the owner of a private bank in Vilna.
His mother was Chava.
His brother, Meir, graduated high school in Vilna and Commerce Nancy University in France.
Dr. Sheskin's father mother and brother have been killed during the Holocaust in a concentration camp in Estonia.
Anna, his sister, studied at Commerce Nancy University in France too like her brother then Emigrated to Israel to Tel-Aviv. She died in Israel in 2005.
Advanture of Dr. Sheskin
Professor Dr. Sheskin Jacob learned Medicine in Poland, despite the fact that in 1937 was introduced a formal Numerus clausus in Poland and the share of Jewish students was limited to 10%, he succeeded to finish medicine and to became a doctor. In 1940 he moved to Lithuania there he had to make a revalidation of his medical degree at the University of Kovno. He was transported by the Germans to the Vilna Ghetto from there he was transported to a Labour concentration camp in Estonia. I both places he works as a general practitioner.
From all the family he remains alive alone. He is liberated in 1943. Dr. Sheskin is travelling back to Vilna and is waiting to his family. He doesn't know that they have been exterminated.
While waiting to his family he began to work as a doctor at the Jewish Ambulatorium, there, he meet with his wife Ogenia whom he married in 1945. He gave birth to two son : Josef, in 1946 in Poland, whom he called after his father and Ari, in 1950 in Venezuela.
Between 1945 and 1947 he obtains specialization in Dermatology & Venereology at Warsaw University.
In 1947 Dr. Sheskin his wife Ogenia and their small son Josef immigrated to Venezuela.
Ari his second son is borned in Venezuala in 1950.
He is working in Caracas Venezuela in Hansen diseases Hospital from 1947 till 1955.
In 1955 the family is moving to Spain. There Dr. Sheskin worked till 1056 in Clinical Dermatology especially with cancer cases in Madrid.
Finaly in 1956 they emmigrated to Israel.
1956-1981 Physician and member of Medical Teaching Staff at the Medical School Hebrew University and Hadassah University Hospital.
In 1960 Chief Phisician and head administrator of Government Hospital for Hansen's Disease, Jerusalem
In 1969 he is becoming a professor.
In 1964 Professor Sheskin have seen that a patient, doomed, was suffering greatly. He gave him Thalidomide knowing that the drug will act as a sedative and help the patient to sleep. The effects were extremely positive. Within three days the leprosy had gone and the skin lesions healed.
From that point after a vast research (110 professional scientifical papers published) Dr. Sheskin, came to the conclusion that thalidomide is fighting against the autoimmune reaction of the body, blood vessels and inflamation.
Thanks to his findings the terrible disease, Lepra the biblical plague, disappeared and so did lot of immunological, inflammatory skin diseases and cancers. [Edit: this is untrue - ENL (leprosy) has not disappeared yet it can be managed more effectively with Thalidomide.]
The research was conducted in lot of contries so he received medals from all over the world and was one from the 52 people that received the Gold Medal "World Academy of Art and Science" ranked as Benefactor of Humanity in 1975.He was considered by the jury delegates from France, England, Italy, Belgium and American Division of World Academy of Art and Science of being ranked among Benefectors of Humanity.
In Israel he was named in 1997 "Yakir Yerushalayim" - Worthy son of Jerusalem, in 2007 a street near Hansen's disease hospital in Jerusalem (now empty) was called on his name.
Professor Jacob Sheskin has six grandchildrens. His son Josef has one daughter Tali, and two sons Elazar and Adi. Ari has one daughter Karin and two sons Elad and Matan.
Professor Doctor Sheskin Jacob was deceased in 1999.
