Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute is a public high school in Toronto, located in the northeast part of Scarborough. It was founded in 1979 and named after Norman Bethune. The school is attended by 1163 students, most of whom speak a primary language other than English [1], the language of instruction at Dr Norman Bethune Collegiate Institute. The current principal at Bethune is Ms Stella Dasko. There are two vice principals, Mr Burns and Mr Humphrey, who recently retired.

The Student Leadership Council at Bethune consists of organizers and committed students:

  • The ABC is the Athletic Bears Council and organizes all athletic events within the school
  • The Student Administrative Council (SAC) coordinates extra-curricular activities within the school
  • The Bethune Journal is the school newspaper that delivers current news and opinion columns
  • The Bethune Music Council is responsible for organizing events related to the music program at Bethune, such as winter and spring retreats and various band trips.
  • The BEAT is the Bethune Environmental Action Team
  • The DECA club is an association for Bethune's business students and competes in various business simulation competitions
  • The YHY is the Youth Helping Youth organization that organizes fundraisers to donate to charities
  • The REPS are the representatives of Bethune
  • The Bethune Blaze does sound, light and stage set-up for all the events at Bethune
  • The Bethune Robotics Team designs and constructs robots to compete in competitions.
  • The Personal and Social Responsibility Club runs activities for the well-being of the school, the community, and the world.

  • Bethune's colours are gold, green, and blue
  • The motto, "Debonnaire", is derived from the personal motto of Dr. Norman Bethune himself. It appears on the Bethune coat of arms and means 'graceful' in French.
  • The Dr. Norman Bethune Concert Band has received gold standards at the MusicFest Canada National finals in 2003[2] and 2006[3] under the direction of Dennis Carpenter.
  • On October 31, 2007, a locker fire occurred in the Gym wing of the school, causing all students and staff to remain outdoors for over 1.5 hours. A student was suspected to be the culprit of the incident.
