Origin: Dr.V.N.Sharma was born of his parents (Late) Dhanwanti Devi and (Late) Ramesh Chandra Sinha (alias Babu Bangla Singh) on 5th October 1944 (Vijayadashmi day) in a small village Nisarpura, P.S. Bikram in the District of Patna, Bihar (India). His officially recorded full name is Vijayanand Sharma. On physical side he is 182 cm in height and about 100 kg in weight
Education: His early schooling was in a typical rural school following basic system of education. He passed his Secondary School Certificate Examination from T.P.H.E. School, Bihta, Patna (Bihar School Examination Board) in 1959. He obtained his B.Sc. degree from Patna Science College (Patna University, Patna) followed by B.Sc. Special Honours degree in Chemistry from T.N.B. College, Bhagalpur, (Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur), M.Sc. degree in Chemistry from D.A.V. College, Kanpur (Kanpur University, Kanpur), an M.Tech. degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur and he obtained his Ph. D. degree from Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad (India) in Environment Science & Engg.
Employment: He took up a job in December, 1963 as a Science teacher in Banshidhari Higher Secondary School, Bharatpura, Patna. He joined the Dept. of Metallurgical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur in November 1965 as a Research and Technical staff. He joined Regional Research Laboratory, Trivendrum (CSIR) in August and left in October 1979 that very year to join Steel Authority of India Limited, R& D Centre for Iron & Steel, Ranchi, (India) in November 1979. He took voluntary retirement from the post of Principal Research Manager, in the Environment Laboratory Group of R & D Centre for Iron & Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited, Ranchi, (India) in July 2002.
Professional Experience: During his stay at I.I.T. Kanpur in various capacities from November 1965 to July 1979 he worked in the area of agglomeration, extractive metallurgy, hydrometallurgy and fine particle processing and published papers in national and international journals and proceedings. He joined R & D Centre for Iron & Steel, Steel Authority of India Limited, Ranchi, (India), in November 1979 in Raw Materials group and worked in the area of beneficiation, sintering and pelletising of iron ores. He was assigned the responsibility of preparing the Corporate plan for Environmental Management of SAIL plants and proposal for World Bank assistance for this purpose. He successfully completed both. SAIL Management also assigned him a major responsibility of co ordinating the EIA/ EMP studies done in all the five integrated steel plants of SAIL at Bhilai, Bokaro, Burnpur, Durgapur and Rourkela to obtain Govt. clearance.He was further assigned the preparation of Corporate Plan for Management of Solid Waste/By-product and Water in all the SAIL Plants. As a member secretary of the Task force constituted by SAIL he got it completed in time. He worked on R&D projects on Environment Management, utilization of Solid by products of steel and thermal power plants, water management in steel works & townships, life cycle assessment of steel making processes etc. He has over 45 publications in National and International Journal and Proceedings to his credit.
Foreign Visits Dr. Sharma visited U.K., Norway and Russia in 1987, 1989 and 1995 respectively and participated in International Seminars and Conferences and presented papers on Environment and Waste Management. He also visited other European countries.
Voluntary Engagements: During the course of study he was the Chairman, PG Students Academic Affairs Committee and member of Senate Post Graduate Committee at IITK. He actively participated in professional and voluntary organizations. He was Secretary of IITK Karmachari Sangh, Secretary and President of Association of R&D Executives, Ranchi and Association of Steel Executives for various terms, Vice Chairman and Chairman of Steel Executives’ Federation of India representing 25000 strong public sector steel Executives. He is the President of Bharat Jan Vigyan Jatha , Ranchi and National Childrens’ Science Congress, Ranchi since 1993.
