Dr.S. Hussain Zaheer Memorial High School

IICT - Dr. S. Hussain Zaheer Memorial High School was established in 1979 and was named in the honour of the renowned scientist Dr. Syed Hussain Zaheer, who was the first director general (DG) of Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), India's largest scientific council. It is located in the heart of the city of Hyderabad, in the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The school operates under the auspices of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, and gives students the opportunity to interact with the scientists of the IICT. Mrs. Kaiser Sayeed (Phd)is the school's Principal.Kaiser Sayeed had been with school sice 1979, she is being responsible for what the school is today.
The school's affiliation with the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology allows students to interact directly with the top scientists in India and around the world on various eductaional platforms. IICT has developed a science fair at the school called "Ignited Minds" in conjunction with National Science Day in India. Zaheer Memorial School will also be the site of the Dr A. V. Rama Rao Science Museum. The school has had the privilege of having laureates of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, Robert H. Grubbs (who won the Nobel Prize in 2005), K. Barry Sharpless (2001) and Koichi Tanaka (2002) speak to students as part of the school's relationship with the IICT.[1]

[edit] Management and facilities
The school is owned and operated by the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT), a research institute of international repute and governed by CSIR. IICT provides all infrastructural support for the school.
The school boasts of a well-furnished Library and well-equipped science laboratories, a modern computer laboratory and the opportunity to interact with world-famous Scientists.

The school opened on June 25, 1979, with 129 students in Kindergarten and Class I and has grown to 2,600 students. The school prided itself in offering quality education for low prices in the early 1980s and 1990's. It has large play grounds and enjoys a park like setting.
[edit] Awards and recognition
The school has flourished with Laurels and attained state level position at SSC Public Examination in 1995 in Andhra Pradesh. Students at Dr. S. Hussain Zaheer Memorial High School have achieved several prizes at District, state and National level in Science Fairs, various competitions, athletics & sports activities including cricket, basketball, earning several trophies and cash awards. Many students obtained merit position in VII and X and scholarships from the Education Department of the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
[edit] Extracurricular activities
The school offers playgrounds for Cricket, Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Shuttle and Badminton.
On July 18, 2004, Dr. Zaheer Memorial High School became the champion of the inter-school hockey tournament, defeating Moulana Azad High School 3-0 in the tournament final at Gymkhana Grounds to earn the first annual V. Purushotham memorial trophy.[2]. In the 2006 tournament, Zaheer Memorial, lost in the tourney quarterfinals, falling to Vijaya High School (Kapra) by a score of 2-1.[3]
In addition to this recently a sports day was held in this school on December 30. The "Torch Drill" performed by the high school boys was the highlight of this 3 hour show (from 3.30 pm to 7.30 pm) which was held in the last.
The latest news from the school is that with the coordination of IICT, it successfully conducted a SCIENCE FAIR exhibition where in the students of not only this school but also from other schools had exhibited their science talents. Here too IICT ZMHS was successful in bagging away the 1st prize trophy.
