DR-1 makes part of the five designated National highways of the country. DR-1 provides a fast connection from Santo Domingo, the capital, to Santiago de Los Caballeros, and the rest of the Cibao one of the most productive regions of the country after Santo Domingo. It's Southern Terminus is the Expreso John F Kennedy in the City of Santo Domingo and then comes out of the Greater Santo Domingo to become whats it's known as Autopista Juan Pablo Duarte. After reaching its midpoint, Santiago, it changes name to Autopista Joaquin Balaguer. DR-1 is one of the oldest and most efficient highways in the nation. Construction began during the period of Joaquin Balaguer and finished by Fernandez in the year of 1996-7. Renovations and upgrades have been done ever since with many future ones like the Viaduct from Los Alcarizos to the D.N being in planning stages.

[edit] Overview
From it Southern Terminus In the D.N(Santo Domingo) to its Northern terminus in Monte Cristi in the Dominican-Haitian Border, the Highway changes names and quality differs.
[edit] Expreso John F Kennedy
The Expreso John F Kennedy is an urban express corridor parallel to the Expreso 27 de Febrero(See DR-3) crossing Most of Downtown Santo Domingo and almost the whole D.N. In this area, unlike its parallel Expreso, it is not composed of Tunnels but instead only by long express viaducts and at ground a 3 lane local service road. The Beginning of this corridor is marked at the western end of the Avenida Quinto Centenario. This Expreso was finished in the year of 1998-9 to relieve intense congestion in the growing city of Santo Domingo. The Expreso intercepts the three main North-south avenues of the D.N, the Wiston Churchill, Lincoln, and Maximo Gomez.
The Corridor does not cross the Ozama River, because it begins after that but is connected to Santo Domingo Este by the Avenue Quinto Centenario/San Vicente de Paul.
[edit] Autopista Juan Pablo Duarte
After exiting the D.N the current expreso becomes Autopista Juan Pablo Duarte which is slow and congested due to improvised exits and the current volume of cars entering the city. This has led to plans for either tunnels or Viaducts as a way to relieve traffic. Exiting the Municipal area of [[Los Alcarizos] the highways becomes two lane and an important connection to the Northwestern cities of the Country.
[edit] Autopista Joaquin Balaguer
After the interruption In Santiagos de los Caballeros, the highway is re-named again for a third time as Autopista Joaquin Balaguer in honor of the Dominican president. In this last part of the highway until Monte Cristi, the quality is much more poorer than the average of the other national highways due informal exits and improvised intersections. The highway end in San Fernando de Monte Cristi close to the northern tip of the Dominican-Haitian Border. The highway connects to DR-5 in the North coast to provide access to Puerto Plata and Sosua, important tourism poinrs of the island.
