DQE Holdings is a traditional utility company based in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company provides electric power to much of metro Pittsburgh, competing with longtime rival Allegheny Power and has extended its services into northern West Virginia and eastern Ohio. Through its chief subsidiary, Duquesne Light, the corporation provides energy to over 600,000 homes and businesses. Power is primarily generated via coal power plants. However, the company is attempting to change this trend and, through its Duquesne Energy Solutions subsidiary, is developing cleaner power sources, including synthetics. The company is also actively involved in the reclaimation of gases from landfills. Aside from electricity production, the corporation also operates a massive network of fiber-optic cables through DQE Communications. This subsidiary is a growing internet service provider in suburban Pittsburgh.
