[edit] Comment
The boundaries and character of Oakland's neighborhoods are older and have more demographic and cultural depth than its freeway system. Oakland's neighborhood boundaries and geographics should therefore be defined by its surface streets and not by its freeways. While it is true that freeways can dissect, separate and destroy the cohesion of neighborhood boundaries and character, literally evicting neighbors with eminent domain, these freeways are less relevant to flatland Oaklanders down on the ground, and more relevant to out of towners and developers driving in from San Francisco. So whomever you are, trying to define 130+ year old streets and neighborhoods with 40 year old freeways..."puulleeease!" —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.208.242.137 (talk) 00:35, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Boundaries of Downtown Oakland
To 66.92.14.198, You questioned what the following phrase means: "...however from a land use and demographic standpoint..." what it means is that the land use patterns and zoning regs change dramatically east of Harrison, into mid rise 3-8 story residential buildings, land use also changes west of Jefferson. South of 6th, and north of Grand...into short 1-4 story industrial and mid-rise residential buildings, as opposed to the downtown skyscrapers on Broadway. Demographically, the buildings shift from a night-time ghost town of office towers to industrial areas and vibrant residential neighborhoods. The planning department is currently in the process of making General Plan update recommendations and we will see what evolves from that process over the next several months.Critical Chris (talk) 10:35, 23 February 2008 (UTC)
- Also, your paragraph about the Oakland/Alameda Ferry Terminal: It is located at Jack London Square and is somewhat irrelevant to a specific discussion of Downtown Oakland as a neighborhood/district, however I wouldn't be opposed to an internal link to the Ferry system, or Amtrak, or a link to an article about Downtown Oakland's mass transit. On this note the two Downtown BART stations (12th St.&19th St.) are an essential aspect of Downtown Oakland and I have restored them to the first paragraph.Critical Chris (talk) 10:41, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

- Hey guy, that "copyrighted" website to which you're referring is an open source public record link to the City of Oakland California's website. It is not copyright infringement. Please don't mis-characterize my links.Critical Chris (talk) 18:54, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] To whomever wants to merge Oaksterdam with Downtown Oakland
My first thought, bad idea, until I hear your rationale. Oaksterdam is kind of a sub neighborhood within downtown Oakland proper. I'm hesitant to label its boundaries but I'd say it's roughly bordered by 15th street on the Southwest, Webster Street on the Southeast, 19th Street on the Northeast, and Telegraph Ave on the Northwest. It's characterized by mixed use office and residential buildings with unique historic architecture older than the skyscrapers south of 14th St, and an abundance of ground floor retail shop spaces and restaurants and cafes. It has it's own history and cultural undercurrent also, which is distinctly different than the daytime office worker fabric south of 15th Street. I also believe it's geographically, anthropologically, and economically distinct enough from the rest of Downtown Oakland to warrant it's own article. - If no one objects, I'd like to remove the "merge" tag.Critical Chris (talk) 17:49, 4 March 2008 (UTC)
