[edit] IDM?
What separates IDM from Techno? I've always thought of artists like Aphex Twin, Autechre, and Boards of Canada to be IDM, and bands like Download (in III and Effector) to be Techno.
What I think separates IDM from Techno is that techno is basically electronically created beat music, where IDM is techno with more emphasis on percussion and ambience and less emphasis on the synthetic sound. To me, Download is Techno in III and Effector because even though they have a relatively noticable ambient quality in parts of their songs (ex: Flight of Luminous Insects), they still sound mainly synthetic and their percussion isn't the main theme of the music like it is for Autechre and Aphex Twin. Of course, I'm using "percussion" loosely here to mean any sound with high attack and a harsh sound, as opposed to a relatively normal attack that the beats in III and Effector have.
I'd much rather Download be labeled as Industrial and Techno, even though Techno is so overused in today's culture enough that it's used to describe anything that isn't Heavy Metal. I don't like how some people think that IDM is the replacement term for techno so that all the stereotypes that Techno has accumulated aren't piled onto the music that we all love, though I can certainly see why you'd want to do that, if that's what you want to do.
So that's what I think--Download is more Techno than they are IDM.
Oh yeah, and I did change the IDM on The Eyes of Stanley Pain because IDM is more of a "less is more" sort of thing than "more is more", like Stanley Pain has. The complexity of those songs aren't described properly as "IDM", IMHO.
Thanks for reading, please reply with your opinions. I'm open to discussion on the subject, and though I have some strong opinions on the matter, I do everything in my power to remain open-minded to the views of others. :) K3V!N 02:10, 1 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:Download bandmembers.jpg
Image:Download bandmembers.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.
