Like much of Southern California, and perhaps all of the United States, there are old-school, non-Hispanic caucasians in Downey who resent the influx of Mexican immigrants, particularly those without documentation. Often, though, this appears to be more a matter of classism than of outright racism.

Today, the majority of Downey residents are of Mexican heritage (again, like much of Southern California). Northern Downey tends to be more non-Hispanic white than the rest of Downy, but this too is changing rapidly.

Perhaps someone can create an article or include a passage of the Stonewood Center in the Downey article. Most cities have at least a mention of shopping malls in their jurisdiction. AManSac 22:18, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

I too live in Downey and the photo questioned is now indeed the McDonald's on Lakewood and Florence (that green paint has been re-coated time after time. Probably a 1/2" thick by now!). As to the reference of damage due to the Northridge earthquake, when it was closed I stared for some time into the store and it looked like nothing was even shaken loose. I think that was an excuse by the corporation to offload an old out of date store. Sadly though the "Speedy" sign seems to be only intermittently lit these days. Its still a busy store and the addition of the gift shop (with restrooms inside) and outdoor tables has helped.

[edit] Police

Someone keeps posting that Downey is served by the Downey Police Department AND the Sheriff's Department. That's incorrect; Downey is served only by Downey PD.
