[edit] History
Downtown Oshawa is the oldest Downtown core in the Durham Region. It's iconic Four Corners are at the centre of downtown Oshawa, and contain an old post office (which has since become the four corners gift shop). Other historic buildings in Downtown Oshawa include the old Town Hall (1838; now a Bargain shop), the head office of Lovell Drugs (1846), and the Shoppers Drug Mart (1885). Down town Oshawa is run down and is now full of drug addicts and homeless people. Oshawa is trying to change this on-going problem, but they don't seem to be getting very far.
[edit] Four Corners
Prior to becoming Oshawa, the city centred at King and Simcoe was called the Four Corners. Four Corners was established in 1836 with a town hall and post office at the intersection of Simcoe street and King street. Four Corners is divided into four parts: East Four Corners, West Four Corners, North Four Corners, and South Four Corners.
[edit] West Four Corners
West Four Corners was constructed in 1841 and has some of the high end stores in the downtown core, such as Mike's Place and The Bargain Shop. It also has the historic mall from the 1890s; before that there was a university, called University of Simcoe (University of Oshawa). (<-- this seems unlikely, requires some supporting evidence)
[edit] South Four Corners
Located on Simcoe St South with over 10 stores including a very reputable cafe called Rossoco's Sweet Shop. It also has the oldest church in the Downtown district: Simcoe Street United (1868).
[edit] East Four Corners
East Four Corners is located on King street east. It was constructed in 1847, and has the famous Regent theatre and Lovell Drugs. It has more than 10 stores and 20 businesses, and is notable for having the tallest building in Durham Region: the Alger Building, which is 5 floors high. <--- The Michael Starr Building at the corner of Hwy 2 and Center Street is 7 floors high.
