downpatrecords was formed in late 1977 with the primary purpose of releasing a Biff Rose album called Roast Beef.
The label was the brainchild of company President and then girlfriend of Rose Pattie Nolan, and company Vice President Fred Rabe-Pickett. downpatrecords was headquartered out of Nolan's tiny apartment on Venice Beach in California. Rabe-Pickett handled distribution and publicity out of his home in suburban Chicago.
Shortly after the initial sales of Roast Beef, Rose and Nolan struck a national distribution deal with Mike Nesmith's label, Pacific Arts. This pairing of the companies was successful enough to produce another Biff Rose album released in 1979 titled Thee Messiah Album, Live at Gatsby's. This was to be downpatrecords' last release. The label broke ties with Pacific Arts and folded.
Rabe-Pickett has attempted to revive the label, however downpatrecords does not hold the original masters of Roast Beef and The Messiah Album and it does not have distribution rights.
