[edit] Origin and recording

The song features lyrics written by frontman Eddie Vedder and music co-written by guitarists Mike McCready and Stone Gossard. According to Mike McCready in the liner notes for Lost Dogs, the song was written after attending a Social Distortion concert in Los Angeles.[1] In another interview McCready discussed the song:

I was excited about it but I wanted it to sound heavier than it actually did when we recorded it. I liked how it came out, but it just didn't work with the rest of the record. Even I had to admit it, but I didn't want to. It was relegated to B-side-dom. Originally it was supposed to be more of a crunch-type thing. It just came out a little bit lighter than I thought. But people seem to dig it when we play it live. I'm proud of it. I like the song.[2]

[edit] Lyrical meaning

According to Eddie Vedder in the Lost Dogs liner notes, the song's lyrics were inspired by the writings of Howard Zinn.[1] The lyrics "You can't be neutral on a moving train" reference Zinn's autiobiography, You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train: A Personal History of Our Times.

[edit] Live performances

The song was premiered live at the band's December 5, 2002 concert in Seattle, Washington.[3] Live performances of "Down" can be found on the live albums Live at Benaroya Hall and Live at the Gorge 05/06. A pre-show montage set to the studio version of "Down" is also included on the DVD Live at the Garden as one of the Special Features.
