Dowling College

Dowling College is a private college with its main campuses at Oakdale, Shirley and Melville in Suffolk County, New York, United States on Long Island, with more than 6,500 full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students through four schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, Townsend School of Business, School of Education and School of Aviation. The current President of Dowling College is Robert J. Gaffney former Suffolk County Executive.

Dowling College originated in 1955 when Adelphi College offered extension classes in Port Jefferson, Riverhead, and Sayville. In 1959, at the urging of community leaders, Adelphi Suffolk College became the first four year, degree granting liberal arts institution in Suffolk County, housed in an old public school building in Sayville. In January 1963, Adelphi Suffolk College purchased the former W.K. Vanderbilt estate in Oakdale and began developing as an important educational force on Long Island.
In 1968, the College severed its ties with Adelphi and was renamed after its chief benefactor, Robert Dowling, a noted city planner, philanthropist, and aviator. In response to increased enrollment, the Racanelli Learning Resource Center was constructed in 1974 to house the library, cafeteria and additional classrooms.
Shortly after the LRC opened, a devastating fire started in the mansion. The ornate ceremonial rooms of the College (the Hunt Room, the Foyer and Ballroom) were substantially damaged. A College committee, led by Dowling Trustee Alan Fortunoff, guided the restoration of the ornate woodwork, precious marble, and the elaborately carved stonework. While many of the fine details were lost, the grandeur and fine proportions remain.

The Rudolph Campus is located just 50 miles east of Manhattan and just minutes from the ocean beaches on Long Island, New York. Brookhaven Campus is located 18 miles east on the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. A Free shuttle bus service runs between campuses. Selected courses are also offered at the Melville Center.

State-of-the-art flight simulators and aircraft including 9 Piper Warriors, an Arrow and a twin engine Seminole. All planes are equipped with the latest instrumentation and avionics including IFR certified Garmin Global Position Systems with moving map capability. New NASA funded airport management simulation lab. Graduates of the program may obtain all pilot certificates and ratings. One of only 14 institutions in the AT-CTI program for prospective Air Traffic Controllers.

Townsend School of Business offers under-graduate and graduate degree programs along with post-graduate certificate programs. Dowling's General Management MBA program is a popular option catering to the needs of Long Island for almost two decades. Many corporations and businesses sponsor their executives' business education in the Suffolk County and Nassau County.
The Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs at Dowling College provide an educational foundation for responsible business leadership. Students develop a professional point of view in the science of management with respect to organization, operation, administration, and control of a business enterprise; a decision-making capability through application of quantitative tools as a key supplement to their own value judgements; the capability of utilizing knowledge within the complex environment of our society; and experience in business affairs through an internship. Emphasis is placed on creating a sense of responsibility to qualify the student as a prospective manager whose mission is to assume social responsibility as well as to serve his or her own economic interest.
The Master of Business Administration programs at Dowling College are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), and have been approved by and duly registered with the New York State Education Department (NYSED).
