Thornwell Jacobs (1877-1956) was born in Clinton, South Carolina, at the Thornwell Orphanage, which was founded by his father Reverend William Plumer Jacobs. [1]

[edit] Early Life

Thornwell learned the printing trade while he was still quite young. Later he earned the Bachelor of Arts degree and Master of Arts degree from South Carolina's Presbyterian College, also founded by his father.[1] He also graduated from Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey in 1899.[1]

After this time Jacobs began institutional support for the Thornwell Orphanage after serving in a Presbyterian pastorate in Morganton until 1905 when he worked in advertising in Nashville. In 1906 he wrote a book called The Law of the White Circle, a novella based on an associated incident.[1]

He was an American academic. He is noted for revitalizuing and rebuilting Oglethorpe University, becaming its president for nearly three decades. It had been shut down during the Civil War and did not successfully reopen until Dr. Jacobs intervened.[1]

Thornwell also originated the Crypt of Civilization time capsule, which was sealed off with steel doors in 1940 (enlisted in Guinness Book of Records as the first successful attempt to do this).[1]
