[edit] Persistently Dangerous

Sigh. I noticed the bullet point about McKay being labeled as a persistently dangerous school "by federal officials", and I suspected it was just more vandalism. I hoped to just add a "citation needed" comment or just remove it. But after researching online, I see it's actually true. The NCLB act requires states to publish data about their persistently dangerous schools so parents can be informed, and move their children to a safer school if they prefer to do so. It looks like at first not much was reported (apparently school violence is drastically underreported). But in the past couple of years states are starting to get on board, and the lists are becoming much longer. Oregon has only provide a list for the past 3 years, and like all other states, it has grown each year.

I graduated from McKay in 1986, and I don't remember it being a particularly dangerous school. Maybe it's gone way downhill, or maybe I just didn't understand things as a kid. Either way, bummer. I hope things can be done to improve it for the community and the kids. Salem is a great town to grow up in.
