Douglas King

Douglas King is Assistant Private Secretary to Her Majesty the Queen. His appointment to succeed Edward Young was announced by Buckingham Palace on 24 July 2007. King had previously been Director of Employment Framework in the UK Ministry of Defence. He joined the Civil Service in 1974 and, among other appointments, has been Deputy Command Secretary at RAF Strike Command. Douglas King was Private Secretary to the Minister for the Armed Forces between 1995 and 1999. King serves as one of three private secretaries to the Queen. Christopher Geidt was promoted from the position of Deputy Private Secretary to Private Secretary in September 2007 and Edward Young succeeded Christopher Geidt in the position of Deputy Private Secretary.
One of the private secretaries is always on duty, wherever the Queen is, either at home and abroad. It is their responsibility to ensure the Queen receives state papers from the British Government and the governments of Her other realms. The Private Secretaries are also responsible for the flow of official correspondence and appointment making for State Visits to foreign nations as well as Audiences with newly-created Ambassadors and honouring of Civil Servants when they retire from office.
