Douglas Byng

Douglas Byng (1893 - 1988) was a British comic singer in West End, revue and cabaret. Billed as 'Bawdy but British', Byng was particularly famous for his female impersonations[citation needed]. His songs are full of sexual innuendo and double entendres. Byng made a number of recordings, many of which are included on the collection Naughty Nights with Douglas Byng. A selection of his songs are collected together in two volumes, Byng Ballads and More Byng Ballads. Byng was also a noted pantomime dame and appeared in over 30 pantomimes.

In the last years of his life he briefly teamed up with another veteran variety artiste, Billy Milton, in the touring revue Those Thirties Memories (directed by Patrick Newley). He made his last appearance in 1987 in a one man show at the National Theatre in London. He also wrote an autobiography, As You Were (1970).
