Douglas (occasionally spelled Douglass) is a common surname of Scottish origin, thought to derive from the Gaelic Dubh Glas, meaning Black or Black/Green Water, referring to locations either at Douglas in Scotland or Douglas in Ireland.
Douglas is also used as a masculine, and very occasionally feminine, given name. It is often shortened to "Doug".
