[edit] History

The school was built by Shapell Industries of California and Windemere Ranch Partners BLC,[2] who were also the two main developers of the Dougherty Valley area in general.[3] Shapell was obligated through a December 1988 agreement with the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to "contribute its fair share of the cost of additional high school space needed to serve students generated by the project," with the project mentioned being a 11,000 home development in the area.[4] Dougherty is the first developer-built high school in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.[2]

The school's name was chosen from more than 150 suggestions submitted to an online survey, although the name, school colors, and mascot had to be approved by the Board of Education.[2] The school logo was designed in 2006 by Jennifer Wong, at the time a senior at Monte Vista High School, after winning a student logo design contest with 12 other entries.[5] Wong received $500 for her design and was honored alongside the contest's runner-ups at a school board meeting.

An official groundbreaking at the school occurred with school board members Nancy Petsuch and Greg Marvel, current San Ramon Mayor H. Abram Wilson, marking the beginning of construction.[6] The construction of the school was divided into two phases, the first of which commenced in May 2005 and the second of which commenced in February 2006.[7]

[edit] Academics

Dougherty offers a somewhat unusual bell schedule, beginning and ending at a different time almost every school day of the week.[8] The schedule includes 6 periods, an "A period", Brunch, and Lunch, as well as Advisory on Mondays.[8]

In its opening school year, Dougherty will include - spanning two grades, as Dougherty is currently only open for freshmen and sophomores- three history and social sciences classes, two English classes, two English language development classes, seven math classes, four science classes, nine world languages classes (in French, Spanish, and Chinese), 11 visual and performing art classes, six physical education classes, 3 "other" electives, and four special education classes.[9]

[edit] Extracurricular activities

[edit] Athletics

Dougherty's stated athletic department mission statement is to "offer athletes positive and rewarding experiences while fostering strong character development."[10] Sports offered will include cross country, football, golf, tennis, water polo, volleyball, spiritleading, basketball, soccer, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse, softball, swimming and diving, and track and field. While most of the sports distinguish both a men and women's team, golf and tennis for men will occur in a later season than for women. Dougherty has hired coaches for various sports, and has an athletic director (Brian Freitas) and assistant athletic director (Nechia Miller). The school is part of the EBAL (East Bay Athletic League).

Former Major League Baseball player, Darren Lewis, coaches the baseball team.[11]
