Douglas ("Doug") Smith (born September 17, 1969 in Detroit, Michigan) is a retired American basketball player who was selected by the Dallas Mavericks in the 1st round (6th overall) of the 1991 NBA Draft. Smith played in five NBA seasons, for the Mavericks (1991-95) and the Boston Celtics (1995-96) and averaged 8.0 ppg in his career. He was selected by the Toronto Raptors in the 1995 expansion draft, but was released by them before he played in any games.[citation needed] He has signed a 10-day contract with Detroit Pistons in January 1999, but has not appeared in any games for the Pistons either.[citation needed] He has played for Great Lakes Storm in the CBA in the 2004/05 season.[citation needed]
Smith is a 1987 graduate of Detroit's Mackenzie High School; he played collegiate basketball for the University of Missouri, where his number 34 is retired.
Doug Smith also played for the US national team in the 1990 FIBA World Championship, winning the bronze medal.[1]
He was dubbed The Next Karl Malone when he was drafted. In 1996, former Clipper commentator Bill Walton seeing how Doug Smith never achieved his draft potential jokingly stated that he "maybe The Next Moses Malone".
