Work is too heavy in the Mine where Bill & Ben work, so a new diesel engine, called Derek, is called in to help. He breaks down climbing Gordon's Hill, to which Boco is sent to help. Afterwards, word gets round, as Percy warns the twins that the new engine has "toothache", to which Bill & Ben respond that they'll find him awkward to work with. He later meets the twins, who are surprised by him, but then pushing trucks, Derek has his cooling system fail again, and Bill & Ben are told that they have proven they can cope with the workload.
