Action on Debt
Whilst it is welcome news that there has been a very slight reduction by the Bank of England to base rates this is unlikely to be passed on to borrowers.
A great amount of people in Bournemouth will face misery in the New Year due to expensive credit and store cards with exorbitant interest rates ,some as high as 29%. Many people are lured into debt by artificially low ,or no interest rates , in the short term which they pay heavily for later.
Bournemouth Liberal Party calls for responsible lending and a minimum and maximum interest rate, We believe the Government needs to do much more in the promotion of Credit Unions and Mutual Societies. The Government should also take action on unsolicited and repeated offers of credit. Where it is proven that inadequate enquiries were made of the borrowers ability to meet repayments for that debt to be reduced or written off entirely.
Action on Europe
You do not have to an EU critic to be alarmed at the new EU constitution, decorated as a Treaty. Just look at the recent House of Commons European Scrutiny Report, it rings the following warning bells:
That the UK would face “new and unquantifiable risks” as a result of the revised EU Constitution, arguing that the UK’s ‘red lines’ would not provide adequate protection.
"There will be a steady transfer of jurisdiction to the Commission and the European Court of Justice in the areas of civil and criminal justice. These matters should be debated on the floor of the House before the treaty is signed." Committee Chairman Michael Connarty added that Britain's "opt-ins" on justice and home affairs matters would surrender jurisdiction from the UK courts: "Although the Government has secured the right to opt-in in respect of justice and home affairs matters, it is clear that if the Government opts in on any measure, ultimate jurisdiction will transfer from the UK courts." He said that choosing not to opt-in would present "new and unquantifiable risks".
The report called into question the Government’s claim that the controversial EU Charter of Fundamental Rights would not affect UK law: "We express doubts on the effectiveness of the protocol on the Charter of Fundamental Rights and do not consider that it guarantees that the Charter can have no effect on the law of the United Kingdom when it is combined with consideration of the implementation of Union law."
The Liberal Party demands that we the British people be allowed to vote on whether we want further fundamental changes to the way our country is run. Parliament clearly can no longer be relied upon even to listen to its own scrutiny bodies.
