[edit] Location

The street runs north east from Granby Row (near Parnell Square), and joins Drumcondra Road at the Royal Canal. It makes up part of the most common route from Dublin Airport to the city centre, and the N1 National Primary Route follows Dorset Street for part of its route. It meets the N2 route at the junctions with Blessington Street, location of the City Basin park, and St. Mary's Place.

[edit] Naming and pronunciation

Dorset Street was named after the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland - Lionel Cranfield Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset. While the English county of Dorset is normally pronounced "Door-sit", Dorset Street is pronounced locally as "Door-SET" Street, with emphasis on the final syllable.

[edit] Today

Recent new buildings and road improvements have improved some of the more dilapidated sections of this long wide street but it still maintains a somewhat rundown feel.[citation needed] It contains a large number of pubs, fast food outlets and an assortment of small retail units as well as apartments and small offices.
