[edit] Club career
[edit] Foresta Falticeni (1997-01)
In 1997, aged 17, Goian was signed by Foresta Falticeni, a football club from Suceava County, where he played for the club's second team. Two years later he was promoted to the first team.
He made his first appearance in the [[Liga I|Divizia A] in 2000, when he was 20 years old in a match versus Gloria Bistrita. It was a happy debut for the young center back, his team won the match with 2-0. Foresta Falticeni didn’t manage to keep up the good work, so at the end of the season relegated in the second division and never reached the first division again.
Despite the lamentable performances of his actual team Foresta that only managed to get the 10th place in the second division, Dorin Goian was remarked by the officials of Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt a small team from the First Romanian Division and he was transferred here at the middle of the season.
Marin Barbu, the coach that discovered Dorin Goian compared him to Gulliver because of his height. He said that Dorin was a simple and hard-working boy, coming from a modest family and he never had problems with him. He also said that Goian was a model player for the other kids from his generation.
During his Foresta Falticeni years he was also loaned to Gloria Buzau for a few months in 2000.
[edit] Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt (2002-03)
After the season 2003-2004 Ceahlaul has the same faith as Foresta and relegates in the second division, but Dorin Goian is already one of the most hunted center back from the internal competition, so he sings a contract with another small team from the first division FCM Bacau.
He played for Ceahlaul Piatra Neamt for one year making 45 appearances and scoring 2 goals.
[edit] FCM Bacau (2003-04)
In 2003 he signed with FCM Bacau and played for Bacau 26 matched while scoring 2 goals. While he was playing here, Dorin Goian was selected for the Romania national football team.
After a great half of season with FCM Bacau (2004-2005), Goian manages to find a perfect shape to impress Steaua Bucuresti’s officials. At the middle of the season Goian makes the jump to one of the most important teams in Romania and his dream begins to take shape.
[edit] Steaua Bucureşti (2004-present)
Steaua paid $100.000 for Dorin Goian, in the autumn of 2004, after 5 hours of negotiations with Gheorghe Chivorchian, FCM Bacau's owner. Goian signed a 5 year contract with Steaua. From FCM Bacau also came Andrei Cristea, Eugen Baciu and Florin Lovin which were bought by Steaua. At that time, he was said to be a player with great qualities, who could potentially play for the Romania national football team.
Even though he only played 4 games this season for Steaua, Goian continued to fight for a place in the first 11 and starting with the next season (2005-2006) the young center back managed to win the trust of his coach and implicitly he became one of the irreplaceable players from the team.
Goian scored his first goal in the Uefa Cup, against Vålerenga I.F. for Steaua with a perfect header inside the box. He soon became a top scorer for Steaua in the Uefa Cup season 2005-06 after scoring against R.C. Lens, Halmstads BK and also SC Heerenveen. He scored his team's second goal in the 2-4 loss away at Middlesbrough FC in the UEFA Cup semifinal, when Steaua were denied qualification in the final by conceding a goal in the 89th minute (they had won the home leg 1-0 and had taken a 2-0 lead in the away game 25 minutes in).
In the Uefa Champions League 2007-08 season Steaua played against Zaglebie Lubin and BATE Borisov in order to qualify in the group stage. With the help of Goian, who scored against both teams, Steaua managed to qualify in the group stage. He would then score again for Steaua against Slavia Prague, but it wasn't enough and Steaua lost the game with 2-1.
Goian was captain for the first time for Steaua on 24 October 2007 against Sevilla FC when Nicolae Dica, the captain, was substituted. The match ended 2-1 for Sevilla FC.
Goian was 50% Steaua's player and also 50% FCM Bacau's player, the team from which he transferred to Steaua. There was a clause in his contract, which said that if he would be sold to a foreign club, Steaua will have to pay FCM Bacau 50% off the transfer fee, but not more than €1 million. Gigi Becali, Steaua's owner, paid €1 million to FCM Bacau and so Goian belongs entirely to Steaua. Becali paid the fee after the match against Slavia Prague in the Uefa Champions League group stage on 16 October 2007.
Goian was the most booked player from Steaua in the 2007-08 season in Liga I with 9 yellow cards and one red card.
