"Dope Nose" is the first single off Weezer's fourth album Maladroit. It was officially released in 2002, though it had been performed live and in the studio during the band's 2000 summer tour comeback after hiatus.

"Dope Nose" was said to have been written on the same night as the hit song "Hash Pipe" from The Green Album, although Rivers' Catalog of Riffs suggests otherwise. A common belief is that frontman Rivers Cuomo had three shots of tequila and Ritalin moments before writing both songs.[1] "Dope Nose" is one of the songs playable in the Playstation 2 video game Amplitude, developed by Harmonix. An interview in Electronic Gaming Monthly with the creators of the PlayStation 2 game Guitar Hero (also developed by Harmonix) mentioned the game's early builds were based on "Dope Nose".

Director Michel Gondry wrote a treatment for a "Dope Nose" music video. The video would feature the members of Weezer playing a game of soccer against a Mexican heavy metal band. Though the band rejected the treatment, it is still available in written form on Gondry's Directors Label DVD.

The song's official music video was directed by Marcos Siega.

During various live shows in 2005, Weezer bassist Scott Shriner would perform lead vocals on the song.

The song reached #73 on the Triple J Hottest 100, 2002.

[edit] Song Interpretation

Rivers writes yet another analytically challenging song to many listeners. However, one theory is that they are singing about someone close who has an addiction. Dope is a slang term for heroin. Cheese is also a slang term for heroin. "For the times that you wanna go and/ Bust rhymes real slow/" could be referring to wanting to go and get a hit. Heroin is a depressant of the central nervous system, "Busting rhymes real slow/" could be referring to the drug's effect. "I'll appear, slap you on the face" could be the addicts or a friends will to overcome addiction.

Cheese heroin is a slang term for form of heroin which can be snorted. "Dope nose" could mean "heroin nose." This evidence makes it believable that "Dope Nose" is related to heroin addiction.
