[edit] History
The school started functioning on 31 January 1958 and has been in continuous operatin for 50 years.
[edit] Houses
DBPC uses the house system to foster a sense of competition and belonging. The four houses are Savio (Red), Bosco (Blue), Francis (Yellow), and Rua (Green). All activities in the school are organized according to the houses.
[edit] Academics
The school is famous for its high academic standards.[citation needed] The students of the school regularly feature among the city and country toppers. In contrast to the other schools in the city where the toppers only do well in their respective board exams and lose out elsewhere, toppers from this school regularly get selected by the top institutes in the country in all fields: engineering, medical, arts, management, business, but specially the first.
[edit] Athletics
Don Bosco has a large number of sports played in the school, with separate coaching classes for each of them. The coaching classes are free for the players on the school team. The different sports are :
Basketball: This is probably the most popular sport in Don Bosco. There are two basketball courts, and the school U-19 team is ranked at No.6 out of all teams(state and school level) throughout India. A yearly tournament called the 'Bosco Challenge Shield' is held in October-November months and is the most popular tournament of Kolkata schools. Not surprisingly, Don Bosco has never lost the tournament in the last 26 years. No one will ever forget the NINJA team of the late 90's early 2001-02 period which went on an unbeaten streak for 3 straight years in all tournaments.
Cricket: Also a very popular sport, the cricket team is also highly talented and has won many awards for the school. The school team is one of the best in the city, and had even defeated club level players from England. Many players also play on the state teams and have been reported as the next sensations in papers.
Football: Football is very popular in the school. Over the past decade the football team has been pretty strong winning several Inter School Catholic Schools and Inter Anglo Indian Schools Tournaments. There used to be the Keventer Cup organized by the school. More recently, a yearly tournament is to be started in the school from 2007-2008 scholastic year.
Table-Tennis: Table-tennis is also a very popular sport in the school. Many individual awards have been won, and the table tennis team is regarded to be quite good.
Badminton:This sport is popular during winters and is one of the newer sports introduced in the school.
Besides these, there is a games room where students can play games like carrom and chess.
The school offers coaching classes for basketball, cricket, football, table tennis and karate.
Further facilities for indoor sports are under construction in the school campus.
