Dominica is sometimes called 'French' Dominica because the Dominican Republic is considered as being 'Spanish' Dominica. To further confuse the world, both are actually republics but 'French' Dominica has named itself (Dominica, the Commonwealth of). Again to confuse the world. What would you call a national of the Dominican Republic? (Think about how it is spelled.) Now on the same mental canvas imagine what you would call someone from 'French' Dominica. When I redid much of the Dominica article ~ 1 year ago I had added many of the links currently there. The general consensus for the Caribbean geography articles is this, links which are good to add tend to be government ones, large media firms of that country, the (official) tourist board/authority and links which only-- focus on that country (rather then sites that just go from country-to-country) or onto several topics, or try to get people to buy a bunch of stuff. The problem that has been found especially with Caribbean countries is one person will post a link. Then someone who is competing with you says they want their site listed, then another person comes and posts a similar site and before you know it there's 40 links of sites that are trying to "sell" vacations, timeshares, obtain the bulkshare of the bookings to that country and so on, or even all kinds of other things about that country which is hardly encylopedic. If you have a link that you think doesn't constitute link spam do just what you're doing, bring it up on the talkpage. Ask others to review it and by all means, don't take anything personal. I have several websites that I do myself that I've opted not to place on the page because although they do seem rather encyclopedic, it would inspire competitors to post their "personal" sites too. I support what CaribDigita says. One reason I removed your links is that you were linking the same site in other articles too. It is inappropriate to add your own site or attempt to promote any website on Wikipedia; please see Wikipedia:External links. This does not imply that your site has bad quality photography, only that it does not belong in Wikipedia unless a neutral editor adds it. Wmahan . 06:36, 2 August 2006 (UTC)

Hi. I added a link to a dedicated page on Dominica's diving. It was removed and I wasn't sure why. I lived there for 2 years while studying medicine and I collected many dive photos from the North. Would someone else please review the page and list it if it is appropriate?

Actually, no, it isn't just a matter of personal opinion. There are official guidelines, and possibly even policies, as to which links can be added. I saw the pronunciation explanation at the top and forgive me if I'm unable to use the phonetic alphabet. I just saw a documentary on the making of the second "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie. They did some location shots in Dominica. Everyone in the documentary pronounced the country's name as doh-mee-NEE-cah, yet I've heard others pronounce it as "doh-MEE-nee-kah".

Which is correct? What is used by the population of the country?

It's doh-mi-NEE-cah, with more or less the vowels in "Roman pizza". In the IPA representation, the short vertical superscript mark precedes the syllable with the primary stress, and the subscript mark precedes the syllable with the secondary stress. —Largo Plazo 11:52, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

The history section tells a different story than History of Dominica. For example, here the article says "For the next hundred years Dominica remained isolated, and even more Caribs settled there after being driven from surrounding islands as European powers entered the region." Meaning the Caribs kept control over the island and the Europeans did not settle in it, while in the extended history article, it is said that English and French settlers did settle in the island during this period. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 132.72.45.187 (talk) 18:04, 20 March 2007 (UTC).

By 1903, Edward VII was on the throne, so the special status of the villages cannot have been granted by "the British Queen". In any case, British monarchs don't rule, they reign.

The reservations were either devised by the Colonial Office or, more likely, the local Governor, Administrator or District Officer.

It would be interesting to read more on the history of the Carib people and the Nineteenth Century "black" government of the island, rather than Dominica's hum-drum life as yet another British colony, in the Twentieth Century.

Is the following line really nessisary: 'It is distinct and separate from the Dominican Republic, another Caribbean nation.' I can understand mention in the article of confusion between the two nations and similarities of their names, but the second sentence seems a bit extream. The Not to be confused with the Dominican Republic. At the top of the article does enough to redirect confused users without the lead paragraph having to do it as well. Honestly I find it a little disrespectful to this nation to include mention an unrelated nation in the second sentence simply due to a similar name when just above that it was already pointed out. "This special Carib Territory was granted by the British Queen in 1903" - but that's impossible, as the Queen then was Queen Alexandra, who had no involvement. Did it happen under Edward VII, or earlier under Queen Victoria? P.M.Lawrence.

would it be alright to add Cariban and Antillian creole(Kwéyòl) as recognised regional languages because Dominica has a special carib territory and i assume the main language spoken there would be carib so technically it would be a regional language and also antillian creole (Kwéyòl) is spoken to large degrees in Dominica as well so wouldnt that be a recognised regional language i think we would be contributing to the article if we did add these to the information box. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gr8opinionater (talk • contribs) 17:46, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

If your "assuming" as you put it, that carib is spoken there, then it certainly should not be added. This is an encylopedia, we add things we know to be true, not assume to be true. I have been to the Carib territory in Dominica, they spoke english, whether or not they also speak Carib I cannot say for sure myself. Russeasby (talk) 18:12, 20 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] tourism "underdeveloped"

Who's to say what's underdeveloped, overdeveloped or has just the amount of development?

Previously, the first sentence of the Tourism section stated, "Unlike many other Caribbean islands, Dominica's tourism is underdeveloped (65,000)." I changed it to read, "Compared to many other Caribbean islands, Dominica's tourism industry may be considered to be underdeveloped (65,000 visitors per year)."

The initial sentence was blatant opinion, especially for a place nicknamed the "Nature Isle of the Caribbean."

[edit] Condition of the boiling lake?

I added a link to a 2005 New York Times article (http://travel.nytimes.com/2005/02/06/travel/06dominica.html?scp=4&sq=dominica&st=nyt) that asserted that the boiling lake had diminished in volume and its ability to impress tourists/visitors. Does anyone know if the lake's condition is unchanged since the publication of that article?

Also, I question if this geographic feature (and discussion of its present condition) doesn't deserve at least a reference in the "Geography" subsection.

OK, I see the condition of the boiling lake was removed without any explanation (I'd hope it isn't because something thinks it bad for tourism). If the condition reported in the NYT is no longer accurate, fine. But given that the lake's conditions fluctuated considerably over a span of months (as documented at both http://www.cdera.org/cunews/news/dominica/article_792.php and http://www.natureisland.com/BoilingLake.html), it should be referenced somewhere. Perhaps a "Geology" section is warranted ... the island's youthful geology is responsible for the rugged terrain, boiling lake and great diving. Plus there are 10 active volcanoes (according to the CDERA site).

Besides, this line currently in the Geography section -- "The volcanic nature of the island and the lack of sandy beaches have made Dominica a popular scuba diving spot." -- has nothing to do with geography ... the information pertains to oceanography or geology.

Having lived in Dominica for five years (1999-2004), I was exposed to the strong sentiments of the people when it came to their leaders. However, the entry that refers to Edison James [[1]]and is a link from the main page on Dominica, has a reference to his "egomanical personality", which I believe violates the Wikipedia NPOV [[2]]Ediabid (talk) 04:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC) Thia A.
