Domingos Culolo

Angola's newly appointed Ambassador Domingos Culolo was born in Uige Angola in 1941 . He is a lawyer and most recently served as Angola's Ambassador to Slovakia. His previous positions include Attorney General and Deputy Attorney General.[1] The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) welcomes the recent statements by the Angolan Attorney General, Mr Domingos Culolo, on the Press freedom situation in Angola and congratulates him on his principled stance.
... Mr Culolo earlier this month spoke out clearly in support of a free Press in Angola and condemned recent excesses committed against journalists by the police in Angola. Mr Culolo promised to use his position to put an end to Press freedom violations in the country, and further assured journalists that any cases against them would be investigated in terms of the Press law, as opposed to the draconian Law on Crimes against State Security.
MISA is acutely aware of the difficult legal environment journalists are operating under in Angola, largely due to the lack of a functioning Constitutional Court that will allow people to seek judicial recourse in the event of a violation of their rights. We believe that Angola indeed has a good and exemplary Constitution and Press law which provides substantial protection for the rights of journalists and a free media. However, events in the country since the beginning of the year have painted a disturbing picture of wanton disrespect for these rights by those in authority.
Mr Culolo's sentiments have given great hope to MISA, and media practitioners in Angola, that a free and independent media in Angola, providing an important platform for views and opinions which are not restricted to those of the ruling party or other powerful groupings, is not a pipe dream. We further hope that Mr Culolo's sentiments will lead to greater judicial protection for media practitioners in Angola, while also speeding up the process of establishing a Constitutional Court. ... Finally, we'd like to endorse the SJA's call to Mr Culolo for the conclusion of investigations into the murders of Angolan journalists Ricardo de Mello, Antonio Casimiro, Zau Bunga, Simao Roberto and Mauricio Cristóvão.1
