Dollar Bay High School

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dollar Bay High School is located in Dollar Bay, Michigan. It was established in 1914 and lies right on the outer boundary of Dollar Bay, a small town on the Keweenaw Waterway. Having less than 400 students K-12, Dollar Bay is a tight knit community with a lot of supportive staff and faculty which makes a comfortable yet workable atmosphere. Dollar Bay offers many advanced placement classes and dual enrollment programs provided to help kids excel in their fields of interest. Sports are also a large part of Dollar Bay life, the school offers basketball, hockey, track, and golf. Most active students are from Dollar Bay, Tamarack City, Hubbell, and Lake Linden.

[edit] Academics

Advanced placement classes are offered for subjects such as math and science. Because the school cannot support a full teaching staff, most teachers are forced to teach multiple classes. Another program offered through Dollar Bay is dual enrollment for juniors and seniors through neighboring colleges, Michigan Tech and Finlandia University. Students involved in this exchange program will go to a university of choice for 2 hours (usually twice a week) and join in the class they have chosen. Much like actual college students, they will receive homework and take part in any class-related activities. This provides students with an inexpensive opportunity to experience post-secondary education while still in high school. The graduation rate is almost 100% over the last 50 years.[citation needed]

[edit] Sports

Like most schools, Dollar Bay offers sports such as basketball, hockey, track, and golf.

Basketball

A new gym has been added to the school which is used for home games and practice. There are full Varsity and Junior Varsity boys and girls teams along with programs for middle school students and children in the elementary for early basketball development. Dollar Bay High School boys Varsity has won multiple district tournaments throughout the years.[citation needed]

Hockey

The hockey program at Dollar Bay is the smallest of the four. Only a few students a year join up. As a result, Dollar Bay merges their team with nearby Jeffers High School to form a full squad. Hockey is not widely observed in the Dollar Bay community but is still considered a Dollar Bay event.

Track

The track program at Dollar Bay is the second largest. Both Varsity and Junior Varsity teams are available for students 7-12 to join. Although both teams mostly consist of girls, the boys team has been increasing steadily over the past few years. Dollar Bay cannot afford a track, nor does it have space to build one. Practice consists of running the streets of Dollar Bay for distance and doing field events out of makeshift pits and mats.[citation needed]

Golf

Golf is a growing sport at Dollar Bay, with more students joining each year.

[edit] Student Life

The main obstacle for students to overcome in Dollar Bay is the small size of the school and the budget.
