The Dolfijn class submarines from the late 1950s and the early 1960s of the Royal Netherlands Navy are a class of four submarines, the Dolfijn, Zeehond, Potvis and Tonijn, (the last two after modernisation). The Dolfijn class is a special Dutch design and has three separate pressure cylinders. One for the living/working part of the crew and two for the engines, batteries and storage rooms. The allows the submarine to dive much deeper than other submarines from the late 1950s, with a maximum diving depth of 200 m. They were built between 1954 and 1966.
[edit] The Boats
The keel of the Tonijn was laid in 1962 and she was completed in 1966. She served with the Royal Netherlands Navy until 1991. The Tonijn has been preserved in the Navy Museum in Den Helder.
