Doğanşehir

Doğanşehir is a district of Malatya Province of Turkey.

A small town with a population of 14000.It is about 60 kilometres south of Malatya just off the main intercity route. Railway line connecting Western Turkey to Eastern and Southern Turkey and beyond runs through the town. Surrounded by mountains it is located on fault line. The last earthquake was in 1986 which caused damage, death and injuries. Its history goes back to Roman times. There are some remains of the city walls which are badly neglected. It has undergone significant demographic changes recently. All Armenians have left, so have the Turks who were brought by the state from Kars in Eastern Turkey following the war between Czarist Russia and Ottoman Empire in 1877-78. In their place are Kurds and Turks from surrounding villages and towns.

Dogansehir and surrounding areas are abundant with water, two small tributaries of Euphrates run through the town. Surgu Dam irrigates the plains of Dogansehir and nearby Akcadag. Remittances and farming are main sources of income. It produces a variety of fruits which includes, by far, apricots but also apples, grapes, pears, plums, cherries and others. Farm produce includes wheat, barley, corn and sugar beet. Sheep and goat farming, once main source of local economy, has lost its significance due to the ban imposed by security services in 1990s on farmers not to use pastures because PKK activities in the region. Beekeeping and trout farming are becoming common.

CLIMATE: Cold winters with significant snowfall on highlands, dry and hot summers.
