Dmitry Gulia

Dmitry Gulia (Abkhaz: Дырмит Иасыф-иҧа Гәлиа) is a famous Abkhazian writer. He is considered to be the father of Abkhaz literature and made an enormous contribution to its development. Dimitry Gulya was also one of the creators of the Abkhaz alphabet (based upon Cyrilic). He wrote a number of poems, stories and novels, and many of his major works were translated into Russian and Georgian. Streets, theatres and public places in Abkhazia are named after him.
