[edit] Welcome to Wikipedia, Dlodge

Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

Here are some handy tips:

[edit] Invite to CLINMED et al.

I've noticed that you've been editing medicine related articles -- from your contributions. We have a place where the medically minded people hang out: WikiProject "Clinical Medicine". You are invited to join or just browse the talk page, which is also known as the doctors' mess.

Seeing that you're in cardiac surgery-- if you have some time, the CABG article could use some expert eyes. :) If you're looking for info on how to do references see WP:CLINMED/Writing_medical_articles.

Feel free to ask me any questions you may have. Other helpful people (and actual doctors) are Samir (who also happens to be in T.O. like yourself), QRS (a retired cardiac surgeon -- that's around occasionally) and Jfdwolff. I look forward to more of your edits. Nephron  T|C 03:21, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

Welcome Daniel!
I noticed you've added yourself to the participants list, so I wanted to give you a warm welcome. Surgery is generally covered very poorly here on Wikipedia, so I hope you can change that a little with your edits. If you're interested, I've been working with User:Ksheka to improve myocardial infarction; since he's an interventional cardiologist, maybe a surgeon's view can provide some counterweight . If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, or anyone else on WP:CLINMED / the doctor's mess (I can assure you they're the friendliest group of Wikipedians on the planet ).
Enjoy Wikipedia,
grtz, Steven Fruitsmaak (Reply) 19:43, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Pumphead

Thanks for the welcome and the links; the link on editing medical articles is quite helpful. I've noticed how poorly some of the surgery articles are written; there are a few I plan to update as I find time. Right now the #1 is pumphead - the plagiarized text from the National Enquirer prompted me to start editing the wikipedia pages. Dlodge 20:46, 10 December 2006 (UTC)

I read through the pumphead article. Funny and interesting at the same time. I bet the editors of the NEJM are now kicking themselves for publishing Newman's study... with the National Enquirer's use of the article for entertainment purposes. Nephron  T|C 22:57, 11 December 2006 (UTC)
It's isn't like the NEJM to publish such a study without a control group. However CABG has been the most studied procedure in the history of surgery, and Newman's study made Type II neurocognitive deficits a hot topic in cardiovascular research. (maybe I should define type I & II neurological injury somewhere). Awareness of the issue has been much of the driving force behind the recent innovations in OPCAB. Unfortunately, the whole "pumphead" issue has been used extensively by physcians and corporations promoting stenting as superior to cardiac surgery. A PCI vs. CABG would be a good wiki page, undoubtedly subject to lots of editing and likely a NPOV tag a few times.
I have started a CABG vs. PCI page in my sandbox. Dlodge 01:39, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Thanks

Hello Daniel & thanks for the suggestion on my talk page. Although I have 3 layers of spam protection I've elected to take your advice & delete my email address from my home page. When I initially registered I ticked the box "Enable e-mail from other users", but haven't yet worked out how to use templates to tag the home page.
May I compliment you on your initiative in gaining both B.Eng & MD degrees which will be of great benefit in furthering the application of computer science to the science & art of surgery. As a personal observation, there needs to be better dialogue between those in clinical practice with those who design instruments, for all from nurse upwards, in order to restrict the ever increasing complexity of operation which allows 'the hand of Murphy' to be of potential danger.
Happy to correspond. Geoff Geoffrey Wickham 02:46, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Thank you kindly for the compliment on my combined degree. I took the liberty of restoring the email text on your homepage, but replacing the Wikipedia email link instead of your actual address. Dlodge 06:04, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] re: Glasair Aviation

The articles are looking good, and I am interested. I'll see what I can add over the next few days; while I used to go to the Arlington Fly-In yearly and hang out at the S-H factory, things have changed over the years and they're no longer as public-friendly as they once were. I wasn't aware that New Glasair and New GlaStar had merged, for example. Anyway, I'll add what I can, and scrounge around for photos of Glasairs and GlaStars. ericg 23:04, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I don't have much of a background in airplanes, so any help is appreciated. I'm not certain the companies have merged, but both the Glasair and Glastar are now sold by Glasair Aviation, LLC. Dlodge 23:21, 14 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Surgical staples

Thanks for creating the article; I fixed a typo (the kind I seem to skilled in making), & added some info I stumbled across in my searches the other night. Now I just need to play model. -- llywrch 23:13, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] RE: removed link from warfarin page

Hi Daniel - I just want to let you know that the link to warfarin-related postings on ClotCare is not a spam link. The site has a wealth of resources for patients and healthcare professionals relating to warfarin. ClotCare is a free resource, does not sell anything, subscribes to the HONCode, and all information is presented by leading anticoagulation/antithrombotic therapy experts from the US and Canada. The author of each posting is clearly identified, and you can review the credentials of each editorial board member at http://www.clotcare.com/clotcare/eb.aspx. If you have any questions you can contact me directly at mariewalker@clotcare.com.

[edit] AfD nomination of E. Converse Peirce 2nd/Publications

I've nominated E. Converse Peirce 2nd/Publications, an article you created, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but in this particular case I do not feel that E. Converse Peirce 2nd/Publications satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion; I have explained why in the nomination space (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and the Wikipedia deletion policy). Your opinions on the matter are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/E. Converse Peirce 2nd/Publications and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~). You are free to edit the content of E. Converse Peirce 2nd/Publications during the discussion but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion discussion. Thank you. Resurgent insurgent 11:13, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Since I'm on cardiac surgery at the moment...

If you have a sec you can double check/perhaps enhance my description[1] of the angiogram (image) in angiogram and angioplasty. Nephron  T|C 03:56, 27 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] CPSO

Hi, If you could, add the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) to your watchlist. It seems to attract a lot of POV-driven commentary. I've been there a couple of times to clean-up... it could use another set of eyes watching. Nephron  T|C 19:21, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Renaming of the minimaze page, etc.

Dr. Lodge, would you have time to revert some of your edits on the minimaze page? It's now entitled Maze procedure (which I think we agreed needs its own page), and begins with "The maze procedure is a collection of cardiac surgery procedures...", which is not gramatically correct. The part about the Maze is intended only to give background regarding development of the various minimaze procedures. To highlight this, perhaps the heading that now reads "The Cox maze procedure" should read "Origins of the minimaze procedures: The Cox Maze" or similar. Thanks. jamesmcclelland 21:35, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the prompting, I've been quite busy lately and haven't been doing much Wikipedia editing lately. I met Jim Cox a few weeks ago and I've been meaning to fix the Maze pages. Dan. Dlodge 00:25, 8 May 2007 (UTC)

Dr. Lodge, there are now separate pages for the minimaze procedures and for the Cox maze procedure. Everything was moved correctly so previous history is intact. The Cox maze page is mostly a "stub" but feel free to buff it up when you have time! jamesmcclelland (talk) 23:01, 24 February 2008 (UTC)

[edit] drug eluting stent towards consensus

have a look at the DES page where I hope we're coming to a consensus Donsmokem (talk) 02:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)

[edit] template:interventional cardiology

you seem to be knowledgeable about making and deploying templates. I have started a Template:Interventional Cardiology and would be glad for tips how to get it incorporated into the superstructure. Also invite you to build consensus at the drug-eluting stent discussion page. Can the advert and cleanup tags go? I think so. thx Donsmokem (talk) 03:20, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
