Transnistria, also known as Trans-Dniester or Pridnestrovie, is a region in Europe situated at the North-East of Dniester River. Local authorities claim it is an independent state, naming it Transnistrian Moldovan Republic. It is not recognised so by any state or international organisation, and it is considered part of Moldova.
[edit] Overview
Transnistria declared independence from Moldova, but within the Soviet Union on September 2, 1990, as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic. This was declared void by then-Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachov. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, in 1992 a war started in the region between Moldova and Transnistrian separatist forces. The Russian (former Soviet) 14th Army interfered in this conflict on separatist side and since then Moldova has no control or influence on Transnistrian local authorities. A three-party (Russia, Moldova, Transnistria) Joint Control Commission supervises the security arrangements in the de-militarized zone, comprising 20 localities on both sides of the river.
Seeking recognition, local authorities claim Transnistria has it's own President, government, parliament, military and police (militia) force, constitution, currency, postal system and stamps, flag, national anthem, and coat of arms.
A 1,200-strong Russian military contingent(14th Army), as well as over 20,000 tons of Russian-owned weapons and munitions are present in Transnistria.[1] Moldova and OSCE demand their withdrawal. According to a verdict issued by European Court of Human Rights, the presence of these troops is illegal (breaking the July 21 1992 agreement), and Transnistria is "under the effective authority or at least decisive influence of Russia".[2]
Transnistira is sometimes compared with Abkhazia and South Ossetia, all three being frozen conflicts.[3]
