Djurleite

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Djurleite is a copper sulfide mineral with formula Cu31S16. It is an opaque lead grey to black mineral which crystallizes with monoclinic - prismatic symmetry. It is typically massive in form, but does at times develop thin tabular to prismatic crystals. It shows no cleavage and has a brittle to conchoidal fracture. Its Mohs hardness is 2.5 to 3 and its specific gravity is 5.63. It occurs with other supergene minerals such as chalcocite, covellite and digenite in copper orebodies.

It was first described in 1962 for occurrences in the type locality Barranca de Cobre, Chihuahua, Mexico. It was named for S. Djurle who synthesized the mineral before it was discovered naturally occurring.
