[edit] CS Lewis Quotation
I was quoting from memory, so I may not have it precisely right, but the quotation is from one of the early chapters of Mere Christianity. Lewis compares the then-contemporary tendency to use "Christian" to mean "good person" to the wearing-down of the word "gentleman", which originally carried a meaning of social class and landholding, irrespective of behavior: "When Adam delved and Eva span, who was then the gentleman?" (Wat Tyler). It later came to betoken anyone who behaved himself very well, as gentlemen claimed they behaved, and gradually wore down to mere approval, and finally it became an insult to say someone was not a gentleman. I hope this helps. Robert A West 14:27, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
