[edit] International Auxiliary Language Ideas

Have ideas for international auxiliary languages? Post them here:

Examples

  1. I am not opposed to the creation of such a language.
  2. If such a language is to be created, perhaps we could use symbols from languages all over the world to create a new version of the International Phonetic Alphabet that is not western biased.
  3. Along those lines, let's learn from Esperanto, but start fresh so as to not carry along the western bias.
  4. For such a project to work, we would need collaborators from many different cultures.
  5. I say we keep the number of characters to a minimum. Even so, I see no reason why we couldn't have some degree of international representation...
  6. If we're going to create a new international auxiliary language, it may as well serve a potential purpose beyond spoken communication... Thus a sign language needs to be co-created. No ignoring other disabilities either! Thus, a braile system and... what else?

[edit] Modify the Welcome Message to Explain Itself?

Below is what I first believed to have been an automated message from some random member of some sort of wikipedia welcoming committee (I now know that it is, of course, just the standard welcome template, but I think it would be good for such a message to have an explanation as to where it came from). The problem partially arises because there is no separation between the welcome template and what initially appears to be a personal note,

"I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, please be sure to sign your name on Talk and vote pages using four tildes (~~~~) to produce your name and the current date, or three tildes (~~~) for just your name. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!, UserWhoPosted 00:41, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC)"

from the user who posted it. However, clicking on "edit this page" quickly shows only (for example)

{{welcome}}, [[User:UserWhoPosted]] 00:41, Jun 2, 2005 (UTC).

so if the user who posts the welcome note does not explicitly state, "This message is from UserWhoPosted", then it may frequently appear to the newcomer that the welcome message is automated, as it appeared to me. Please post any ideas on how to improve the welcome template below under Welcome Template Improvements. Below is the template as it first appeared on my user page:

Welcome!

Hello, Djbaniel, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

[edit] Cultural appropriation

Hello, Djbaniel. How ya doin'? :) Thanks for stopping by my page to drop me a note and for getting cultural appropriation off to a really good, running start. I rewrote portions of it and, hopefully have improved it a bit. I added text relating to the power relationships between originating and exploiting cultures, as it is central to the meaning of the term. (After all, we don't speak of "cultural appropriation" when commenting on the wearing of Western dress by other cultures. :p) As an African-American whose culture has been pimped mercilessly and virtually universally, I share your viewpoint about people looking foolish and what not, but I had to rework that portion a bit. It's probably not as effective, but at least its NPOV (neutral point of view) -- Wiki policy 'n' all. I see you're relatively new to the project, so WELCOME! Peace 2 u. :D deeceevoice 15:45, 3 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Hey, early riser/night owl. :) Your suggestion sounds intriguing. While I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to contribute, though, from an "American perspective," I'd be more than pleased to contribute what I can from an African-American perspective :p -- the two are quite different. I need a better sense, though, of what you have in mind. Drop me another note, and I'll ponder it over the weekend. Meanwhile, this night owl is off to bed to catch a few z-z-z-z-zzzz's. Forgot to mention that your comment about "trustlocks" in Dreadlocks made me chuckle. Hadn't heard that one. Peace. deeceevoice 09:21, 4 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] AID project

On this week's Article Improvement Drive voting, an article you supported was selected. This week we focus on improving Abortion to featured article status. Hope you can help. -- the wub (talk) 12:50, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Improvement drive

You nominated abortion to be improved by the WP:IDRIVE. The page is currently protected from editing however and is an extremely controversial subject. I have to remove the nomination for now. Try to nominate it again when the seas have calmed at this article. Sorry, I hope you understand.--Fenice 9 July 2005 12:38 (UTC)

In this context, I have another idea: there is no article on Wikipedia on Human embryogenesis. This is information that is often needed in the edit wars on abortion. There is a new collaboration, Wikipedia:Science collaboration of the week, for which this would make a good nomination (and I would support it, btw).--Fenice 9 July 2005 12:42 (UTC)

[edit] IDRIVE

Can you explain what you are doing to the IDrive topic?--Fenice 04:54, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Maurreen did the rollover last sunday, and it was done correctly.--Fenice 04:59, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

I do not mind the ordering, but for all I can tell, you also deleted spice trade from the nomination. That is why I reverted it.Napoleonic wars should be given the full week, because it has a good chance of achieving featured status. If you can find images and fix everything else, we can talk about a rollover to a new topic, but leave it on for now.
The topic Napoleonic wars is absolutely correct, worthy a.s.o. The rollover was done on Sunday 7 by Maurreen and the next topic change will be next sunday, the 14th. The projects always stay on for one entire week. Why did you change it? I assume it was a misunderstanding?--Fenice 05:11, 9 August 2005 (UTC)
Putting the nominations in order is a lot of work - if you want to do it, I think it is a good idea.--Fenice 05:59, 9 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Please contribute to the collaboration!

Girl is the collaboration of the week! Please come grow this article... Mamawrites 03:22, 5 September 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Re: Sandbox

Thanks for your edit to my sandbox. Yes, I understand the problem that could occur, and my sandbox is most definitely not from Texas! So I appreciate your initiative! Thanks once again! —Eternal Equinox | talk 20:37, 21 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The proposal on your userpage

Hi! Your user page invited me to leave a comment re:article translation, so I'm doing so. I think setting up a project to do this would be a great idea. Sadly, I have neither the technical knowledge to have anything to do with This nor the language skills to manually translate something, but I do feel that this is a worthwhile project and maybe you should try making a suggestion at the village pump.
