[edit] origin?

The first line lists his birthplace as Davis, CA, but on the right under his picture it says his origin is Hayward. Anybody have a definitive source?

Derekstiles 13:14, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

San Jose. The source: Wilder, Eliot (2005). 33⅓ Endtroducing.... London: Continuum, 23. ISBN 0-8264-1682-9.  "I was born in '72 in San Jose". There ya go! Seegoon 17:51, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] used-bin incidentelia

This odd phrase (and the list it is part of) is used here, amongst other places (all the same text AFACIS, probably cut and paste from bumf his PR company has sent them). But what the heck does it mean? Discarded incidental sounds, perhaps? Discarded by whom, then? No-one else in the googleverse uses the term in full. Mr. Jones 14:25, 4 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I think it's a reference to his legendary collection of used vinyl, of black-hole-formingly massive proportions.Lesqual 04:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] used bins

used bin refers to picking up cheap records from used record stores. Incidentalia is probably someone trying to sound clever when talking about incidental sounds.

so... used-bin incidentalia = incidental sounds from the used record bin.

FWIW, of course Antichris

[edit] entroducing/endtroducing

in the article, the album is only referred to as endtroducing, however, i was under the impression, which is backed up by the official website discography, that the original 1996 album was called entroducing (no d), but that then when the deluxe edition was released, with the bonus disc "excessive ephemera", it was called endtroducing. i have the non deluxe edition, which DEFINITELY has no d in the title on the sticker, but i can't speak for the deluxe edition...Febodyed 00:23, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

ok. don't worry about that, i got out my CD and the sticker on the front does indeed say entroducing, but both the side of the album case, and the disc itself say endtroducing. i guess it's a typo? that was also made on the website too!Febodyed 00:31, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] "(This has nothing to do with DJ Shadow)"

Under the Mixes subcategory, two CDs are marked with this. Does anyone know what they are about? If they don't have anything to do with the artist, maybe they shouldn't be there. If they are related, this should be rewritten. --BillWeiss 01:01, 19 April 2006 (UTC)

He definitely did release material with the "What I Do In My Bedroom" title [1]. I don't see a good reason why the mystery sentence should be there, I'll remove it for now. Mazca 14:50, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
Those were bootlegs that were put out in his name. They do not, as far as I know, include any actual work by DJ Shadow. f(x)=ax2+bx+c 23:38, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Maybe they mean he didn't write the songs just a mix or a compilation? XdiabolicalX 00:03, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Biography section in need of clean-up

There are too many dates and bits and pieces of information. Look at the last sentence for example which is set in 2002. It lacks a fluid text worth calling "Biography". I'm suggesting and not doing because I have neither a detailed knowledge about him, although I like his music a lot, nor an actual hard copy to (I didn't say steal, did I?) some wiki-worthy text. Ran J. 00:37, 25 May 2006 (UTC)

That last sentence is totally out of place anyway... the previous few sentences take the biography up to 2006 in a fairly coherent manner, then the sentence about "Six Days" being directed by Wong Kar-Wai is randomly inserted at the end. I've folded it into the earlier paragraph about what he was doing in 2002, though it still feels a little tacked-on. Otherwise, the biography section is clear enough right now, in my opinion. Mazca 14:42, 1 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] 2 things:

1) There should be a list of his samples somewhere. I know this would be a ridiculous task but it's what wikipedia is all about. See List of samples used by Boards of Canada. It's a combination of lyrics and references.

    • Good luck finding them all. His debut LP is said to have been culled from samples, no original source material at all. but within the CD jacket, the only samples listed are the more dominant ones (Bjork, Nirvana, etc)... from like 3 tracks. 192.60.35.185 16:55, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

2) Wasn't his music also in that movie with Samuel L Jackson as a crazy teacher in LA? Can't remember the name right now... Kansaikiwi 06:12, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

'187' it was called, brilliant film. XdiabolicalX 00:12, 13 September 2006 (UTC)

[s107 http://s107.net/dj_shadow.php] has a list of some of his voice samples. -Quasipalm 00:24, 15 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] picture

can we have a picture of shadow Extremeweb 14:22, 24 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] The outsider

Come on guys, surely we could have more about this dreadful/wonderful album on, I mean, wow, it took the world of Shadow fans by storm, either to one extreme (hatred) or another (pure joy) . I think more could be put here. Hope its cool to addd input. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 20.138.246.89 (talkcontribs) 10:56, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Timelines

This is not the best biography page by any stretch, but it could at least have better timelines? For one, it doesn't list when Josh Davis was DJing at KDVS. For that matter, it doesn't talk about his life at all, only his albums. There's got to be better info out there somewhere...--Reverend Distopia 16:19, 7 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] flattery, or crush?

There is also a female DJ in Shanghai who goes by the name DJ Shadow, and is planning to sue her namesake for piracy.. ok just kidding on the last part. "Beijing woman proves a force behind the decks"

[edit] Quality Standards

I found the fact that the words quality standards ran into the info box rather ironic and funny. I took a screenshot if you're not sure what I mean. http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/1248/qualitystandardsug7.jpg - ZEROpumpkins 08:52, 13 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] "Only piece of equipment Shadow used"

"The only piece of equipment Shadow used to produce the album is the AKAI MPC60 12bit sampling drum machine."

That's not actually possible

If only for the fact that he would have to sample the sounds onto the MPC from something else ... It's highly doubtful for a lot of other reasons as well

Sorry I don't know how to "sign my comments"

    • Devil's advocate - he could have strung up more than one MPC, right? I ask b/c himself and Cut Chemist, along with Nu-Mark, have performed live using only MPCs. 192.60.35.185 16:56, 28 June 2007 (UTC)

He could have done and probably did

That still doesn't make sense tho

For example the sample from the Metallica song "Orion" ... that doesn't come with an MPC when you buy it

He'd have had to had played the record on a set of decks at the very least before sampling it onto the MPC ... it's just a misleading sentence that gives the impression of "get an MPC ... bang some buttons ... produce Endtroducing"

I know that as I don't have a reference for this it can't go in the article as it's not encyclopaedic

I'm just bringing it up

As for performing live with just an MPC ... that is possible and I've seen the video that you mentioned myself

The difference being that when they go onstage the MPC will have been prepared by the users with the samples they need for that performance beforehand

Again sorry about the whole not "signing my comments" thing ...

_

I'm curious as to whether the MPC was the only piece of equipment he used. I didn't know that The Guinness Book of World Records was now a reputable source. How much research has been done on this? Are there any original quotes from Mr Davis stating that the MPC was the only piece of equipment he used. Mr Davis is an accomplished drummer, could it not be possible that he recorded the percussion samples himself? Or is this not included within The Guinness Book of World Records guidelines? If this is the case, would the equipment he used then include before mentioned drum kit, recording equipment, etc?

Also, please sign your comments by typing four tildes. (~)MattMatt110 (talk) 12:09, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] only 13 "Live appearances"?

That's gotta be "Notable live appearances", right? Or did DJ Shadow really only appear live 13 times? I seriously doubt that. -Gazongagizmo 09:53, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use rationale for Image:ThePrivateRepress.jpg

Image:ThePrivateRepress.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Date of birth

I'm fascinated to know where this January 1 1973 d.o.b. is coming from. I have a pretty reliable source - the 33⅓ book on Endtroducing..., in which Shadow says that "I was born in '72 in San Jose". It's on page 23. I'm not kidding. Look it up if you must. I can't be bothered to have an edit war over it, but if anyone's coming to this article looking for actual factual accuracy... uh-oh. Seegoon 17:45, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

I've wondered about that myself, but could not find a good source online for the dob. Most sites seem to be copying their information from this article, which is problematic if our information is inaccurate. If you have a source, straight from Miller's own mouth, then go ahead and change it and put in the ref. ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 17:53, 16 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Live appearances

Is this section legitimate? What I mean to say is, do other band/musician articles have "live appearance" sections? And, if so, surely there are some criteria for which appearances are notable, and which ones are not. This has the potential to grow wildly and become useless. What is the encyclopaedic purpose of such a list? ---RepublicanJacobiteThe'FortyFive' 17:32, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
