[edit] History

Spanish Fly began deejaying during the early 1980s in a South Memphis rap group called the True Blue Cru. They were known for their new style of rap and dedication to their fans; in one incident, they gave blood for money to buy refreshments.[1] In 1983, the group disbanded after member Mighty Rappin Fishbone was incarcerated.[citation needed] Prior to Fishbone's incarceration, the group had been scheduled to perform at one of the top nightclubs in the city. Fly instead went alone, winning both the rapping and deejaying competition by himself.[citation needed] The club's owner, Bud Chittom, hired Fly to DJ at another one of his clubs, Club No Name in East Memphis. From there, Spanish Fly's music began to get airplay in Memphis.[citation needed]

[edit] Fame

During 1984, radio station Magic 101.1 FM would broadcast live from Club No Name in the Club No Name Hotmix. Fly scratched songs from top artists of the day. DJ Spanish Fly's fame grew nationally as fans as would go out of town and play his music in other states.[citation needed] Even bootleggers contributed to Spanish Fly's success, bootleging his music and selling it other states where they too became big hits.[citation needed]

[edit] Legacy

After giving more than 20 years to the rap game, DJ Spanish Fly was awarded at the Pioneer of Memphis Hip-Hop in 2006 by Unified Memphis Artist Association.[citation needed] Many Memphis rappers like Three 6 Mafia, 8Ball & MJG, Ska-Face Al Kapone, Yo Gotti, and Jazzy Pha attribute their success to DJ Spanish Fly.[citation needed]
