DJ Keenan
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DJ Keenan is an electronica artist known primarily for his work locally in Hagerstown, Maryland and Frederick, Maryland, as well as songs distributed on his MySpace page. Keenan was formerly known under the title "DJ Kizzle", before changing his title to DJ Keenan, following with his last name, "Keenan".
This DJ Keenan should not be confused with the DJ Keenan from Washington, DC.
DJ Keenan released his first album, My First Disaster, containing 13 tracks, on May 21, 2007. Some of these songs he wrote himself, and some were just remixes of metal songs such as "Numb/Encore" by Linkin Park, "Glamorous" by Fergie, and "Out Of Control" by John Reuben. The My First Disaster record was recorded in a townhouse attic room, with nothing but one microphone, a sound reflector, and recording software created by Creative Labs. Many of the songs were also random jams recorded via Keenan's Creative Zen Micro player.
Keenan worked on Disaster with a local Frederick, Maryland rap group known as the Young Soldiers, a group of 12 to 14 year old children from the same housing development as Keenan. Marquann Bowie, known as M.B., who is a member of the Young Soldiers, did most of the co-op work with DJ Keenan on the Disaster record, including co-writing and singing on "Numb/Encore Remix". The only other work Keenan did with the Soldiers was a spontaneous track recorded at a Maryland public park, called "Jerry-Licious", a song making fun of Fergie's "Fergalicious". The song was nothing but beatboxing, and was low quality, and completely random, which was why Keenan put the song on the record: for comedy.
Some of Keenan's songs, were just small remixes or voice cancellation remixes of other songs, such as the "We Takin' Over (Stadic Tide Remix)" and "Glamorous (Out Of A Dream Remix)".
DJ Keenan does lots of co-op work with other DJ's not including the Young Soldiers. "Glamorous (Out Of A Dream)" was a project between Keenan and DJ Invisabro, "General Physics" was a remix with DJ Mog, and "The Sounder/Remember the Name" was just a smash up remix from a Gorillaz song (though DJ Keenan has never met or associated with the Gorillaz band about this project).
All DJ Keenan work is done as an underground project. As of now, Keenan provides all of his records and projects for free.

[edit] The Frost Backs
Prior to the release of Disaster, Keenan edited and produced a jam session album with The Frost Backs, a band of friends from St. Maria Goretti High School, where Keenan also attends. The Frost Backs include DJ Keenan [piano/synthesizer], Joseph Flook (aka DJ Flook) [bass guitar], Nick Daisey [electric guitar/cowbell], and Joe Hill (aka Papa Joe) [drums/percussion].
[edit] The Young Soldiers
DJ Keenan also assisted the Young Soldiers, a rap group from Frederick, Maryland with their first album. Keenan helped produce, co-write, and was featured on several of the tracks. Keenan helped greatly with additional vocals, and supplying beats for the basis of the Young Soldiers' music. However, before the Young Soldiers had a chance to finish their CD, the group broke up.
Since the group split up, DJ Keenan has been helping many of the solo artists of the Young Soldiers with their music. Keenan has helped M.B., DJ Taz, and Jazzy Jay with their singles and upcoming albums.
