[edit] Career
Campbell started his career at Aston Villa as a trainee, but was not offered a professional contract. He went on to play for non-league sides Chesham United, Stevenage Borough, Billericay Town and Yeading.
He had a hugely successful spell at Yeading, and his skills were showcased in the 2005 FA Cup against Newcastle United in a game which was televised on BBC One. This prompted Brentford manager Martin Allen to sign him for the League One club for £5,000.
Campbell scored two goals to lead Brentford to victory over Premiership side Sunderland in the 4th round of the FA Cup on January 28, 2006.
Three days later he was sold to Birmingham for £500,000, the fee rising to £1.1 million depending on appearances, goals, and whether Birmingham avoided relegation. He made his Premiership debut as a substitute on February 4, 2006, playing the final 20 minutes in a 2-0 defeat to Arsenal. He scored his first goal at his new club against Colchester on August 5, 2006, which Birmingham won 2-1.
[edit] Leicester
On 20 July 2007, Campbell signed a four-year contract with Championship side Leicester City for an initial fee of £1.6 million, which could rise to £2.1 million. Leicester reportedly beat off competition from Watford for his signature.[1] Campbell scored his first competitive goal for the club against Crystal Palace on August 18,[2] which was soon followed by his second against Watford seven days later.[3]
Campbell didn't score again until the League Cup against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, which Leicester lost 4-3. | title = Chelsea 4-3 Leicester | url = http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/league_cup/7065182.stm | publisher = BBC Sport | date = 2007-10-31 | accessdate = 2007-11-01}}</ref> He scored his third league goal of the season against Preston North End on November 6,[4] but also suffered a knee injury.[5] Worse was to come when scans revealed he was suffering from osteitis pubis - an inflammation of the pelvic bone, keeping him out of football for three months.[6] Campbell scored only 4 goals from 28 league games as Leicester were relegated from the Championship.
