[edit] Synopsis

Kelly invites the entire staff to a celebration of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Light. Michael mistakenly believes it to be an Indian version of Halloween.

In Stamford, Jim decides to bicycle to work. Andy turns a late night of paperwork into a drinking game, which Karen wins by pouring her shots into her wastebasket.

Ryan fails to make a favorable impression on Kelly's parents, who in turn try to set up Kelly with a young doctor. Initially reluctant to attend the festival, Pam gives in and ends up enjoying herself.

Inspired by a conversation with Kelly's parents about Hindu marriage customs, Michael publicly proposes to Carol. Uncomfortable, Carol declines his offer and leaves the room. She later explains that this is only their ninth date, and drives home, leaving Michael to find a ride. Pam sends a text message to Jim, who does not answer because he is passed out on his desk. At the end of the evening, Michael tries unsuccessfully to kiss Pam.

Jim tries to bicycle home but is unable to stay upright. An amused Karen gives Jim a ride.

[edit] Deleted scenes

The Season three DVD contains a number of deleted scenes. Notable cut scenes include:

  • When Jan calls about the party, Michael gently scolds her for not knowing what Diwali is. Jan quickly changes her tune.
  • Michael answers the question "Are you excited about the Diwali party?" by telling a rambling story about his original plans with Carol for a romantic evening.
  • Andy talks about his college nicknames.
  • When the Stamford staff order sushi for dinner, Andy is puzzled when "Big Tuna" Jim orders eel.
  • Dwight manufactures an excuse for going to Angela's house after the party.
  • Kevin appeals to Kelly's parents to hire his band for Diwali 2007.

[edit] Notes

For a list of songs featured in this episode, see List of songs featured on The Office.
  • The costume Michael is wearing as he and Carol walk into the Diwali celebration was first seen in the Season 2 episode "Halloween". However, in "Halloween," the costume (and Michael) had a blue tie, while in "Diwali," they are both wearing a maroon tie.
  • This is the first time Karen's last name, Filipelli, is spoken aloud. It is mentioned by Jim as Karen walks him to her car.
  • Kelly's parents were played by Mindy Kaling's real parents.
  • Andy's desk nameplate indicates that his last name is Bernard.
  • The high school scenes were shot at Grant High School in Los Angeles, the same school in which the series Freaks and Geeks was filmed. The creator of that show, Paul Feig, has directed several episodes of The Office.[1] Rashida Jones, who plays Karen, also appeared in one episode of Freaks and Geeks, where she also played a character named Karen.
  • This is the second episode in which Dwight plays the guitar, after "Take Your Daughter to Work Day".
  • Jim's bicycle in this episode is different from the one shown in his bedroom in a deleted scene from "E-mail Surveillance".
  • Angela refers to Kevin's foot condition, first revealed in a deleted scene from "Grief Counseling".
  • Michael asks Kelly's parents if their marriage was the kind of thing where when Kelly's father died, her mother would have to throw herself on the fire. This is in reference to the practice of Sati.
