[edit] History of Divorce in Canada

I think we need an article on the history of divorce in Canada. Here is an example from my own family: my cousin John, who was estranged from his wife, moved in with Ann, who had her surname legally changed to his. They had children and in most ways behaved as husband and wife, but with endless legal complications. For example, both were legally parents of their children, but were legally unrelated to each other: neither could authorize emergency medical treatment as next of kin. How common was this kind of arrangement? Did Canada recognize foreign divorces? How many divorces were approved by the Senate? Dynzmoar 12:17, 7 July 2006 (UTC) (Proudly Canadian-American!)
