[edit] Summary
Arguing fair use under Wiki's policy: As a general rule of thumb, Wikipedia allows low-resolution images of copyrighted material if they are unlikely to affect the potential market for the material, are used for the purposes of analysis or criticism, and for which there is no alternative, non- or free-copyrighted replacement available.
There are only three pictures available of Riegles; one is from the Rose Bowl folks who clearly say NO TOUCHY, so I no touchy. This picture - Riegels making that famous run - is from http://gtalumni.org/news/magazine/spr98/div04.html.
This picture was taken by Sam Sansone who later was the photo chief at the Los Angeles Examiner. http://www.laobserved.com/archive/2003/06/herald_examiner.php
This is the only photo taken that day by any photographer of Reigels running the wrong way. The Chandler family owned the Examiner and also the Los Angeles Times. The Examiner folded in the late 1980s and the Chandlers sold the Times to the Tribune company. There's a fellow by the name of Sam J. Riegles who writes police and firefighter photography books. (See Amazon for the list). Sam J. might be the son. The wrong-way Riegels photo was taken in 1929 by Sam Riegels, and this maybe the only sports photo he ever shot. He preferred hard news photography. How do I know this? Because I know photographers who worked with Sam Riegels, and have heard and read the story as Riegels told it to colleagues. Also, this photograph is probably out of copyright. It would have expired unless it was specifically renewed. Skywriter 07:36, 1 March 2007 (UTC)
